Overview
Responsible for serving as a key leader within Mastec Renewables Geomatics department. This position is responsible for utilizing advanced surveying techniques and geospatial knowledge to drive innovation and enhance operational processes. The Senior Commercial UAS Pilot will maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of our internal surveying services, ensuring that our operations meet the highest standards. This position will safely operate the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) on assigned projects to ensure necessary data collection. Knowing and following FAA rules and regulations is crucial and the operators must be able to operate in a safe and effective manner.
Location & Travel Details: You’ll get the opportunity to travel across the US, helping our team build renewable projects. This is a traveling position (up to 100%), where you will be onsite at a project location. You have the potential to be placed on a project site located in any state throughout the US. You’ll spend 8-12 months on average per project. When travel is required, meals and lodging will be covered on a corporate expense card. This position is eligible to receive a company vehicle.

Responsibilities
Lead UAS operations by setting up and operating equipment for various geospatial tasks, including LiDAR, photogrammetry, and orthomosaic mapping
Perform routine maintenance on UAS equipment, including propellers, batteries, and other accessories, to ensure optimal performance
Execute safe flight operations in compliance with federal guidelines, maintaining high safety standards
Operate and maintain utility terrain vehicles and other field equipment as necessary for project execution
Mentor and develop Commercial UAS Pilots, providing hands‑on training and leadership to build a skilled and cohesive team
Contribute to the development and enhancement of the UAS training program, establishing departmental standards and best practices
Stay current with emerging UAS technologies and advancements, integrating new tools and methods into the department’s operations
Maintain comprehensive knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to FAA compliance, ensuring that all UAS activities adhere to relevant laws, codes, and safety standards
Obtain necessary permits and approvals for surveying operations, ensuring full regulatory compliance
Maintain an active and up‑to‑date Part 107 certification, including recurrent training
Foster clear and effective communication between surveying teams, project management, and other departments, ensuring that all parties are aligned and informed
Collaborate closely with surveying teams and project management to provide accurate and timely information, addressing challenges and proposing solutions as needed
Provide regular updates on project progress, highlighting any issues or opportunities for improvement
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications Education and Work Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent
Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, Surveying, Geospatial Science, Aviation, or a related field preferred
Minimum of five years of experience in UAS operations, with at least two years in a senior or supervisory role
FAA Part 107 Certification (current and recurrent)
Extensive experience in operating UAS for geospatial data collection, including tasks such as LiDAR, photogrammetry, and orthomosaic mapping
Experience in the renewable energy sector or large‑scale construction projects preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficient in advanced UAS operations, including experience with LiDAR, photogrammetry, orthomosaic mapping, and other geospatial technologies
Strong understanding of GPS, GNSS systems, and their integration with UAS operations
Ability to read and interpret complex construction plans and technical schematics
Proficient in the use of geospatial software, data processing tools, and computer file management
Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and guide junior team members
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly document processes, create reports, and provide detailed feedback
Ability to effectively communicate with cross‑functional teams and manage relationships with key project personnel
Excellent problem‑solving abilities
Positive attitude and strong work ethic
