Job Title
Media Relations Specialist
Location Main Campus (Gainesville, FL)
Job Description As a key member of the UF/IFAS Communications team, the Media Relations Specialist will research, write, and distribute compelling stories that highlight UF/IFAS research, education, and Extension programs. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, staff, and media professionals to increase visibility, promote expert knowledge, and enhance the reputation of UF/IFAS across Florida and beyond.
Responsibilities
Research and develop story ideas, conduct interviews, and write press releases and feature stories for distribution to media outlets and internal platforms. Collaborate with communicators, photographers, videographers, and graphic designers to create multimedia content. Track scholarly research and suggest faculty experts for media opportunities. Contribute to the UF/IFAS News blog and support the implementation of media strategy.
Cultivate relationships with UF/IFAS faculty and staff to identify newsworthy content, engage with journalists, editors, and broadcasters to pitch and place stories in targeted markets, monitor platforms like HARO, The Conversation, and ProfNet to connect UF/IFAS experts with national media, and maintain and manage media contact lists and strategic media relationships.
Provide public relations support to the UF/IFAS Government Relations team and serve as a liaison to promote a positive public image of UF/IFAS at the state level.
Track and report on media projects using project management tools, curate and distribute a weekly digest of UF/IFAS news to internal and external stakeholders, and participate in regular news scans and reporting rotations.
Review and edit content created by others for publication, develop feature stories for UF alumni and research publications, and provide media relations support to departmental communicators as needed.
Conduct media training and in‑service sessions for UF/IFAS faculty and staff, promote best practices in science communication and public relations, stay current on industry trends, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
A degree in public relations, journalism, communications, or a related field.
Relevant professional writing experience in journalism or a related field.
Excellent writing skills.
Understanding of local, state, and national new media.
Knowledge of marketing, communications, and social media.
Sharp news sense, good copy‑editing skills, and strong attention to accuracy and detail.
Previous experience writing scientific and/or research articles.
Knowledge of Associated Press style.
Expected Salary $50,000–$55,000, commensurate with education and experience.
