Bus Driver #17-26 – Newport Mesa Unified School District
Position: School Bus Driver. Full‑time, 10‑month school year, split shift Monday‑Friday, minimum 25 hours per week.
Job Summary Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, operate and maintain school buses to transport students safely to assigned locations using designated routes. Perform regular safety inspections, prepare records and reports, and ensure compliance with all governing laws and district policies.
Essential Duties
Drive a school bus along a designated route; pick up and discharge students in accordance with time schedules; stop traffic and escort students across streets as necessary.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices; comply with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes, and regulations.
Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus and while waiting at bus stops; prepare related reports as necessary.
Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses, including interior, exterior and engine; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems; prepare and maintain related records.
Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition; wash, sweep and clean buses; refuel vehicles as necessary.
Assist handicapped students to board, sit in and leave the bus safely; use wheelchair lifts and tie‑downs.
Determine appropriate action in potential or real medical emergency situations; administer first aid to passengers as needed.
Utilize two‑way radios for bus‑to‑bus and bus‑to‑base communications.
Maintain routine records related to assigned activities.
Attend safety meetings and programs as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Six (6) months of experience as a school bus driver (preferred).
Valid Class A or B California Motor Vehicle Operator's License with passenger transportation endorsement “S” and air‑brake endorsement.
Current California Special Driver Certificate valid for school buses.
Current California Highway Patrol approved First Aid Certificate (if required on Special Driver Certificate).
Current Valid DL‑51 Medical Card.
Must be able to be insured and continue to be insurable by the District's liability insurance carrier.
Examination Procedures Written Examination: 50% of the composite score.
Performance Examination: 50% of the composite score.
