Principal Planner – Land Use Services Division The City of Alexandria, located in Northern Virginia, invites qualified candidates to apply for two full‑time Principal Planner positions (Grade 24) within the Land Use Services (LUS) Division of the Department of Planning & Zoning.

These positions support the City’s zoning, historic preservation, and non‑development services functions, contributing to the planning and maintenance of Alexandria’s unique waterfront and historic districts.

Roles & Responsibilities

Develop and implement work plans that prioritize daily land‑use case processing for the Non‑Development Services Unit and the Historic Preservation Unit.

Supervise and oversee a small team of professional planners processing administrative and public‑hearing land‑use applications, including special use permits, demolition, and alterations of historic district buildings.

Prepare and proof staff reports and presentations for the Board of Architectural Review, Planning Commission, City Council, and City Manager.

Lead special projects such as zoning text amendments and community‑meeting coordination related to land‑use changes.

Provide project‑management, customer‑service, and communication support to stakeholders, including community members, developers, and preservation organizations.

Offer guidance and professional development to team members, conduct annual evaluations, and support staff growth and training.

Respond to assignments from other City departments as needed.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements:

Four‑year college degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

At least five years of progressively responsible experience in urban or transportation planning, including large‑scale urban projects.

Knowledge of local municipal zoning, historic preservation, and land‑use regulations.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and GIS (ARC GIS or equivalent).

Completion of pre‑employment background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree or five+ years of advanced experience in zoning, urban planning, and historic preservation.

Three years or more of supervisory experience with urban planners and project management of land‑use cases.

Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or equivalent.

Extensive experience with regulatory research and stakeholder engagement.
