Summary
The Secretary of Defense has ordered a department‑wide hiring freeze subject to limited exceptions. This position is under the DoD hiring freeze and will not be offered until an exemption is approved. You will serve as the High Temperature Reentry Materials Engineer in the Reentry Systems Office (Code A06) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.

Salary: $142,488 – $195,200 per year

Duties
Provide high‑temperature reentry materials engineering expertise to SLBM and future reentry systems.
Lead material definition, development, testing, and aerothermal/thermo‑structural analysis for all reentry programs.
Coordinate with program sponsors, technical staff, contractors, and other agencies to integrate material solutions.
Offer technical advice to SLBM sponsors and NNSC Dahlgren technical staff on reentry material performance.
Investigate high‑temperature materials for potential reentry system use.
Requirements
U.S. citizen;
Eligible for federal employment and able to pass E‑Verify;
Direct deposit pay program participant;
Retired military members may be considered under DoD rules;
Top Secret/SCI security clearance required before duty entry;
Drug test and finance disclosure required;
Critical Acquisition Position status – three‑year tenure agreement required unless waived;
Travel may be required (concurrently with travel to CONUS/OCONUS). Telework is not available.
Qualifications Applicable series:
0801, 1301, 1520, 1550, 1560. Candidates may apply to whichever series best matches their background. Applicants must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to ND‑4 (GS‑12/GS‑13 pay band), e.g., engineering or scientific work with high‑temperature composite materials, including analysis, testing, and development.
Education
Professional engineering degree (ABET‑accredited) or equivalent in physics, mathematics, or computer science.
Or substantial coursework and experience that demonstrates mastery of high‑temperature materials science and engineering (e.g., 24 semester hours in relevant subjects, 30+ semester hours in mathematics and engineering).
Or degree/experience corresponding to 1301, 1520, 1550, or 1560 series requirements.
