Principal Consultant, Renewable Energy

– ERM ERM is seeking a Principal Consultant, Renewable Energy to oversee impact assessment, planning and permitting for renewable energy facilities throughout California or Arizona. The role will lead environmental impact assessment and permitting for renewable energy facilities and other major capital development projects including solar developments, technology infrastructure and offshore/onshore wind energy projects. Core responsibilities include: Managing and performing complex permitting and compliance for renewable energy and tech sector development projects, including local, state and federal permitting, NEPA, CEQA and other relevant regulations. Leading the preparation of permitting documents for energy/industrial facility development, expansion, maintenance or decommissioning, with a focus on local permitting. Managing the preparation of discipline‑specific reports, NEPA/CEQA documents and state‑level environmental reviews consistent with federal, state and local regulatory requirements. Contributing technical, subject‑matter or project management expertise on permitting strategies, due diligence reviews, critical issue assessments, impact assessment deliverables and overall quality control. Preparing technical proposals and participating in business development with existing clients and identified leads to expand renewable projects and the team. Managing quality, budget, schedule expectations and scope‑specific assignments. Collaborating with other ERM practitioners to execute impact assessment and capital project permitting. Expanding ERM’s profile and market share through client relationships and delivery of high quality, reliable service. Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in environmental studies, environmental management, wetland science, planning, geography or related natural resources science field; or 8+ years equivalent experience. 7+ years of project management, licensing and permitting experience, including strong project experience in renewable energy or similar practice across California or Arizona. Experience with federal, state and local permitting, especially developing applications and documents for renewable energy projects. Experience assisting clients in obtaining multimedia permits and approvals for new or expanded facilities. Experience overseeing and coordinating desktop and online studies or research on natural resources, GIS, map interpretation (e.g., National Wetland Inventory, USGS, aerial photography). Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organization/analytical skills; experience writing detailed technical data and reports. Ability to multi‑task, maintain flexibility, travel and work independently with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop junior team members and effective service‑oriented teamwork in a fast‑paced environment. Driver’s license required; position requires frequent travel. Position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship. Compensation and Benefits Annual base pay range: $116,019–$156,352 USD. Additional compensation may include annual discretionary based performance bonus and other benefits such as paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability and AD&D insurance, and a 401(k) or RRSP/DPSP plan.
