The MIE Department has 40 full‑time faculty members, over 225 graduate students, and over 800 undergraduates. The department emphasizes additive manufacturing research in advanced materials such as alloys, ceramics, and multi‑material systems, particularly for biomedical, aerospace, and energy applications. The department has access to state‑of‑the‑art facilities including the Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication (ADDFab) core with laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, a two‑photon nanoprinter, wire‑arc, and cold spray AM systems. Job Description

We invite applications for a tenure‑track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the area of additive manufacturing. The appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2026. The successful candidate will develop an internationally recognized research program, teach existing graduate and undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering (especially Manufacturing and Materials Engineering), and develop innovative new curricula across disciplines. Requirements

Earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related fields. Demonstrated potential for scholarly excellence and an externally funded research program. Strong mentoring record for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering, specifically Manufacturing and Materials Engineering. Salary Range

Between $79,350 and $127,930. The low end is the minimum salary for the rank in the collective bargaining agreement between UMass Amherst and the Massachusetts Society of Professors. The high end includes faculty with multiple years of experience. Specific pay will be determined by the University based on all relevant factors. Application Instructions
