Position Details The MiraCosta College Biology Department seeks associate instructors to teach the following on‑ground, lecture‑laboratory courses in Fall 2023:

BIO 202 - Foundations of Biology: Evolution, Biodiversity, and Organismal Biology

Semester: Fall 2023 (August through December)

Class 1 - Monday & Wednesday mornings at the Oceanside Campus

Class 2 (potential opening) - Tuesday & Thursday mornings at the San Elijo Campus in Cardiff

Description: This course surveys the organismal/meta‑organismal half of biological disciplines. Topics include the taxonomy and physiology of prokaryotes and basal eukaryotes; the taxonomy, developmental biology, and physiology of plants and animals; and single‑species population dynamics and interspecies interactions in communities. The laboratory emphasizes evolutionary process and mechanism, phylogeny reconstruction, comparative anatomy/physiology/survey of plants and animals, and life‑history evolution.

Compensation $83.03 to $96.25 per hour on the 2023-2024 Associate Faculty Classroom Salary Schedule, based on education. View the current Associate (part‑time) Faculty Salary Schedule at jobs.miracosta.edu under 'Salary Schedules'. Direct deposit of paychecks is required.

Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in any biological science (except certain listed degrees requiring equivalency).

OR bachelor’s degree in any biological science AND master’s degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science.

OR a valid appropriate California Community College Credential in the discipline area.

OR the equivalent.

AND sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications Basic function: Under direction, plan, organize, and teach assigned courses in an instructional field or discipline in accordance with approved outlines, education code requirements, and faculty contract provisions; provide feedback and guidance to students and evaluate student performance; perform related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Plan and develop instructional materials including presentations, lectures, demonstrations, homework assignments, laboratory exercises, and project assignments consistent with approved course outlines; teach courses utilizing sound pedagogical methods; modify instructional methods as needed; participate in assessment of student learning outcomes; use instructional technologies; review and select textbooks.

Provide prompt feedback on student assignments; evaluate performance; assign grades; maintain records; submit grades and other records by established deadlines.

Be available to students by telephone, email, LMS, or conference; hold office hours; maintain flexible schedule; refer students as appropriate.

Maintain accurate course records, attendance, and data using management software; submit records by deadlines.

Maintain confidentiality of student information.

Contribute to a collegial environment; collaborate with chairs and faculty on policies and curriculum; demonstrate willingness to substitute.

Play an active role in campus life; attend meetings; serve on committees.

Meet professional responsibilities in accordance with contractual obligations.

Other Duties Stay current in academic discipline, maintain licensure, certification, or continuing education.

May lead field trips and attend events.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge To Theory, concepts, principles, techniques and conventions applicable to assigned courses.

Teaching and instructional techniques for diverse students.

Trends in educational technologies such as Blackboard.

State education code, Title 5 and related laws.

Instructional techniques for students with disabilities.

District organization and policies.

Safety policies and work practices.

Ability To Clearly convey and explain content to a diverse student population.

Employ instructional technologies to maximize learning.

Encourage critical thinking through strategies and assignments.

Evaluate performance fairly and return work promptly.

Assess effectiveness of methodologies and modify them.

Maintain accurate records and submit by deadlines.

Maintain confidentiality of student information.

Meet teaching responsibilities and serve in a flexible manner.

Stay abreast of scholarship and developments.

Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Operate a computer and standard business software.

Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse issues.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical Effort Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending, and stooping; occasional light lifting up to 25 pounds; ability to work at a computer; ability to travel to various locations on and off campus.

Emotional Effort Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, work under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle changing priorities.

Working Conditions Primarily classroom and business office environments; frequent public contact; occasional evenings, weekends, and local travel may be requested.
