Description Essential functions include participating in the academic and physical recruit training programs of the Louisville Metro Corrections Academy and participating in a battery of exams to determine suitability for the position of Correction Officer.
Examples of Duties Under close supervision, duties include attending classes in personnel procedures, regulations, current laws, the criminal justice system, human behavior, and a variety of other topics related to corrections work. Learn about various operational units to gain familiarity with the functions of the Louisville Metro Corrections Department. Participate in practical training including firearm usage, defensive tactics, arrest procedures, use of corrections equipment, and a variety of other procedures and activities related to corrections work. Take tests to measure knowledge gained, evaluate performance, and determine progress made. Participate in physical fitness and strength training. Perform related work.
Minimum Requirements High school diploma or the equivalent. Work experience: Two years of experience as a full-time Correction Officer or Law Enforcement Officer in the United States. Other minimum requirements include being a US Citizen, a minimum of 21 years of age, not having bought or sold marijuana within one year of application, not having bought or sold any controlled substance or narcotic drug without a prescription within six years of application, not having been convicted of a felony or having any criminal action pending against them, misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis, submitting to a pre-employment drug screening, submitting to a pre-employment polygraph test, passing a pre-employment physical, stress and medical examination, wearing personal protective equipment as mandated by OSHA, wearing safety equipment as mandated by OSHA, being vaccinated for hepatitis B, having provided evidence of immunity or having signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment, passing an annual tuberculin test, working a varied schedule, not being a current user of illegal drugs, not being prohibited by federal or state law from possessing a firearm, being eligible for certification as a State Peace Officer, possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, and completing an abbreviated LMDC Corrections Officer academy within six months of hire. Special requirements include meeting qualifications pursuant to the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, 28 CFR 115.17 and 115.317, to include periodic post-employment criminal background checks for applicants and employees in positions which perform job duties that may require contact with offenders in the custody or supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice or with youth in the care, custody or supervision of Youth Development.
