About the Department NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. The department includes state prisons, healthcare and facility operations staff, and the division of Community Supervision.

Position Details Location: Western Correctional Center for Women, Black Mountain, NC (minimum custody facility on a 100+ acre compound that can house up to 366 inmates).

Salary Range: $35,984 – $62,971 (salary grade NC07). This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with state benefits.

Responsibilities

Observe and patrol food service work areas; perform crisis intervention counseling; compose comprehensive reports; execute rescue functions.

Operate locking devices and maintain keys.

Supervise food service officers and offenders.

Input and comprehend computer data; read, comprehend, and calculate menus.

Adhere to and observe sanitary food handling practices.

Requisition food and supplies within an allotted budget.

Instruct and supervise subordinate staff.

Make emergency decisions concerning food service operations and develop operating procedures.

If selected, a new salary will be recalculated based on education, experience, funding availability, and internal equity.

About Western Correctional Center for Women (WCCW) Western Correctional Center for Women (formerly Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women) opened on July 7, 2008 and is a minimum custody facility housing approximately 360 female offenders. Renovations have added new dormitories, an educational classroom, an operating greenhouse, and a medical wing. On Oct. 4, 2021, the facility’s name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women.

Qualifications

Documented experience in sanitation, menu preparation, inventory management, and large‑scale food service production.

Documented supervision of employees and/or offender workers.

High school or GED diploma plus two years of experience in institutional food preparation and services, commercial food service operations, Correctional Officer, or one year as a Correctional Food Service Officer. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

Eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
