PARKS/RECREATION SPECIALIST – HORTICULTURE/NATURAL RESOURCES GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Parks seeks reliable, customer‑focused individuals to join our team as part‑time Parks/Recreation Specialists. The role reports to the Operations or Natural Resources Divisions to assist in maintaining Park Board‑controlled properties. Duties may include general landscape/lawn care, forest restoration, and/or horticultural services. In this role you will provide excellent customer service to park visitors, address inquiries, and ensure a positive experience for all patrons. Ideal candidates possess strong communication skills, a friendly demeanor, and a passion for promoting a safe and enjoyable environment within our parks.

HOURS:

Part‑time, up to 30 hours per week. Some positions may work weekends, holidays, and evenings.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Design, install, and maintain horticultural displays.

Communicate closely with community representatives to plan displays.

Perform planting and maintenance tasks: fertilize, prune, deadhead, weed, replace soil, divide plants.

Assist with landscape bed preparation, mulching, weeding, pruning, planting, and debris removal.

Trail management: inspect and maintain trail system.

Invasive plant removal using herbicide and mechanical means.

Prairie & meadow management; reforestation and native planting.

Support ecological research, data entry, and reporting.

Volunteer engagement and site leadership during projects.

Urban forestry tasks: tree inventory, brush chipping, pruning, and maintenance assistance.

Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe environment/facility.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum age 18, high school graduate, valid driver’s license.

DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

One year of college coursework in natural sciences, education, or related field.

Knowledge of local ecology, culture, and natural history.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office and GIS (ArcGIS/Arc Collector).

Experience with chain saw operation and herbicide application.

Basic math skills; ability to drive a pickup truck in city traffic.

TRAINING REQUIREMENT:

15 hours of training or pre‑season orientation covering CPR, First Aid, Back Safety, Fire Safety, Customer Service, Cultural Diversity, Sexual Harassment, Inclusion, and orientation.

WORKING AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

Indoor and outdoor environments; exposure to office screens, slippery surfaces, water, wildlife, chemicals. Requires standing, walking, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Must have close vision.
