Position Summary This position performs technical communications work in support of the University’s public safety operations. Work involves receiving emergency and non‑emergency calls, monitoring alarms, obtaining and relaying information, prioritizing calls/alarms and coordinating response procedures, dispatching appropriate public safety personnel, and maintaining public safety communications logs and databases utilizing Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD). The employee is responsible for operating a host of complex telecommunications and computer equipment, including multi‑line phone systems, multi‑channel police consoles, two‑way radios, scanners, monitoring security cameras and Division of Criminal Information terminals.

Responsibilities

Receive & process emergency and non‑emergency calls.

Monitor alarms, video feeds, and security systems.

Prioritize and coordinate response procedures.

Dispatch appropriate public safety personnel.

Maintain public safety communications logs and databases.

Operate complex telecommunications and computer equipment.

Remain calm & composed in high‑stress situations.

Communicate effectively with a diversified community.

Make effective decisions in emergency life‑and‑death situations.

Work as a team member and interact favorably with all students, staff, faculty, and visitors.

Maintain confidentiality and discretion in the course of conducting business.

Adapt to change and circumstances.

Work 12‑hour permanent day or night shifts; shift work, weekend, holiday, and overtime work required.

Qualifications

High school diploma and sufficient experience to work under pressure.

Certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment.

Basic Telecommunicator Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google Documents, and Banner.

Must be able to attend and pass a telecommunicator certification course such as a four‑day Sheriff’s Training and Standards Course or The Association of Public Safety Communication Officials (APCO).

Valid U.S. work eligibility and pre‑employment background investigation required.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer candidates who already hold DCI and Basic Telecommunicator certifications.

Two or four‑year college degree is a plus.

Sign‑On Bonus UNC Asheville may offer a sign‑on bonus of $2,000 paid in two installments in the first year of employment to qualified telecommunicators. Eligible applicants must not have worked as a probationary, permanent, or time‑limited employee in the last 12 months.
