The Director - Learning Enhancement provides leadership for student success by building collaborative partnerships between academic affairs, student affairs, and clinical education while providing leadership for learning enhancement. Responsible for providing leadership and supervision to the Learning Specialist team for all KCU degree programs. The Director of Learning Enhancement reports to the Vice Provost for Student Engagement and collaborates with a variety of faculty, student affairs, and academic departments to help improve student support, mentoring, and academic success.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Learning Specialist team members
Develop a living KCU Learning Enhancement Strategic Plan, Vision and Mission
Create and utilize a network of relationships with faculty and staff in all degree programs to effectively deliver learning enhancement and support services
Provide leadership for the planning, implementing, and evaluating co-curricular programs that promote academic achievement, career exploration, and a sense of belonging for all students
Facilitate the development of a culture that recognizes, affirms, and helps students draw upon cultural, communal, and identity-based ways of knowing, being, and doing to achieve educational outcomes
Acknowledge and be responsive to the specific and particular realities of all student communities on campus in order to promote a greater sense of belonging and foster student success
Collaborate with each academic degree program to help develop, implement, and assess a comprehensive student success and retention plan to include strategies and interventions informed by theory, inclusive and equitable practices, and data-informed practices that enhance student retention and graduation rates
Contribute to assessment, accreditation, and other continuous improvement processes of all academic programs
Lead the University’s main academic support services including all learning enhancement, to include peer tutoring services
Collaborate with academic affairs, curriculum, and faculty to ensure that learning enhancement is providing services, which are beneficial to student success
Consult with individual program curricular affairs to ensure that the services utilized are directly tied to the learning outcomes approved by our curriculum committee for each course
Provide oversight of the learning enhancement staff including day-to-day supervision, evaluation, and insuring that staff is invested in and exhibiting strategic goals
Develop and implement annual assessment processes for learning enhancement and utilize feedback to improve overall performance of our learning enhancement services
Contribute key data and evidence to assessment, accreditation, and other continuous improvement processes at the University
Proposes annual budget requests for department
Essential Functions/Key Competencies
Represents the University favorably and in accordance with established KCU Strategic Plan, Mission, Vision, Core Values and expectations
Effectively presents information to educational groups, organizations, staff, students and administration, both verbally and in written form
Applies principles of logical and behavioral thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
Establishes regular office hours and makes provisions to offer academic counseling services to all students either by appointment or on a walk-in basis when possible
Refers students for other professional help when indicated and monitor the student throughout the recommended academic enhancement process
Attends meetings of pertinent professional groups and related organizational meetings and conferences
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as required
Education and Background
Master’s degree in education, higher education, or related field preferred
Five years of experience in teaching and practical adult learning theory application
Proven ability to lead and manage a team in a dynamic and values-based higher education environment
Experience in health sciences education preferred
Physical/Environmental/Other
Frequently required to sit, listen and observe students on a regular basis and for long periods of time
Occasionally stand and walk
Occasionally lift and or move up to 10 lbs
Close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focusWork with students in their often-stressful environment
Strong decision-making and planning skills
Ability to ensure highest standards of confidentiality
Excellent student support service skills
Excellent organizational skills and ability to function under tight deadlines
Sensitivity to the issues and stresses typically faced by professional healthcare students
Ability to establish a receptive and student-centered environment in which students are comfortable discussing their academic or personal problems
