Position Overview: As a Landfill Equipment Operator, your main task will be to expertly operate heavy machinery and assist with various physically demanding tasks at our landfill site. Your contributions are vital for maintaining efficient operations, environmental compliance, and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operation of Heavy Equipment:
    • Safely operate equipment like backhoes, excavators, front-end loaders, and skid-steer loaders for movement and compaction of waste materials.

    • Conduct routine maintenance and inspections to ensure equipment is functioning properly, reporting any mechanical issues promptly.

    • Follow operational guidelines and safety protocols while upholding environmental regulations.

  2. Waste Handling and Compaction:
    • Utilize heavy machinery to effectively push and compact waste materials for optimal landfill space usage.

    • Operate landfill compactors to ensure waste compression minimizes environmental impact.

    • Work collaboratively with landfill staff to coordinate waste disposal and practice proper waste segregation.

  3. Site Maintenance and Cleanliness:
    • Ensure landfill site cleanliness by removing debris and waste materials using manual labor or machinery.

    • Implement erosion control measures through grading, reseeding, and installing relevant devices.

  4. Compliance and Safety:
    • Adhere to safety protocols, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintain a safe working environment.

    • Comply with all environmental regulations and landfill operating procedures.

    • Engage in safety training and emergency preparedness drills as required.

  5. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Keep accurate records related to equipment use, maintenance, waste disposal, and incident reporting.

    • Promptly report any issues affecting operations or safety to supervisors.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record.

  • Experience operating heavy equipment, such as backhoes and excavators, is essential.

  • Familiarity with safety regulations related to landfill operations.

  • Ability to follow operational manuals and safety guidelines effectively.

  • Physical stamina and strength are necessary for performing labor-intensive tasks.

  • Excellent communication skills and teamwork ability are crucial.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Outdoor Work: Expect exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and wind; appropriate protective clothing is necessary.

  • Physical Demands: The job requires heavy lifting, equipment operation for long periods, and stamina to work on uneven terrain.

  • Noise and Vibration: The environment can be noisy, requiring potentially the use of hearing protection.

  • Shift Work and Overtime: We operate six days a week, which may include early mornings and required overtime hours.
