Part-Time Janitor (Hammond) – Salvation Army ARC

Posting Location: Hammond, IN. Salary: $12.50 per hour (fixed).

Job Objective

As the Janitor, you will provide cleaning services, assist with shipping supplies, maintain facilities, and support various Salvation Army activities.

Responsibilities

• Complete daily cleaning duties in assigned areas.
• Clean and dust all horizontal and vertical surfaces including windows, doors, desks, shelves, intake vents, tables, chairs, and cabinets.
• Maintain clean carpets through detailed vacuuming, spot removal, and shampooing.
• Perform hard surface care for tile, concrete, tabletops, drinking fountains, and counters (buffing, sweeping, washing, polishing, spot removal, disinfecting).
• Clean walls, light switches, and doors as needed.
• Maintain cleanliness of kitchen counters, sinks, appliances, and floors.
• Empty trash and recycle receptacles; replace liners as needed.
• Monitor and report maintenance repairs and coordinate maintenance bids.
• Organize cleaning supplies.
• Assist with building repairs such as painting, moving furniture, plumbing, and the setup/tear-down of chapel and holiday activities (e.g., Christmas, Kettles, Toy Shop).
• Drive to pick up food donations as required.
• Preform outside maintenance as needed.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Background check required.
• Preferred experience: Janitorial/Maintenance.
• Valid Driver’s License; maintain Salvation Army Driver’s qualification standard.
• Must complete Safe From Harm training within first 90 days of employment.

Skills & Abilities

• Clear verbal and written English communication.
• Computer proficiency with Microsoft products.
• Knowledge of cleaning supplies and chemical use.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervise volunteers and groups as needed.

Physical Requirements

• Twist, bend, squat, reach, push, pull, climb stairs, stand for extended periods.
• Lift up to 50 lbs.
• Reach and stoop to stock shelves.
• Good hearing, vision, and manual dexterity.

Travel & Working Conditions

Must have a valid Driver’s License; work may require evenings and weekends and occurs in an office, church, or outside environment.
