Summary Of Position This position is responsible for ensuring that proper repairs to tank cars and other railroad cars are performed in an expeditious manner. Depending on the facility the areas of repair may include mechanical, blast, paint, coatings, linings, valve and coil work.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Supervises activities of various hourly classifications in all phases of car repair work ensuring the proper repair of railroad cars received at the shop in a safe, expeditious manner.

Accurately interprets drawings/blueprints to ensure proper completion of repair work.

Ensures all AAR, DOT and Company standards are adhered to during repair.

Selects, trains, motivates and disciplines his/her subordinates.

Accountable for the quality of all repairs performed by his/her subordinates.

Maintains AAR, DOT and company standards by careful inspection of all completed work.

Administrative duties related to labor reporting and material consumption.

Schedules workforce effectively, adhering to established productions schedules whenever possible.

Keeps abreast of work in process to help others maintain efficient scheduling of work throughout the shop.

The incumbent works to epitomize Union Tank Car’s Quality Policy and ensures that subordinates work to meet internal and external customer expectations at all times by fully applying himself/herself and seeing to it that subordinates apply themselves to the task involved, preventing errors, and implementing personal and departmental quality improvement projects. In addition, the incumbent is required to understand the Responsible Care Management System and actively participate in activities outlined therein.

Skills/Specifications

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to read and interpret technical and regulatory documents.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to develop creative solutions and provide technical expertise on projects.

High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks.

Ability to climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet high, bend, stoop, stretch, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds to set-up tables and/or attach to tank cars.

Ability to enter tank cars via a manway opening of 18” to 20” in diameter.

Ability to tolerate both heights and confined spaces.

Have keen visual and audio acuity to recognize various shop danger/warning signals to avoid injuries and promote a safe work environment.

Possess considerable stamina to perform the essential functions over a large geographical plant area.

Ability and availability to work considerable overtime hours that may often be required.

Be willing and able to wear safety equipment, such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, earplugs, and respirators.

Have vision correctable to 20/20 for inspection activities.

Education/Experience/Qualifications

HS Diploma required with a minimum of 3 – 5 years’ relevant work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Strong background knowledge of AAR and FRA rule administration.

Understanding of tank car design, components and regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions Supervises hourly employees in the efficient, expeditious repair and maintenance of railroad tank cars and other railroad rolling stock. Ensures AAR, DOT and Company quality control standards are adhered to by inspecting all completed work. Records labor hours and material consumption in an accurate and timely manner. Adheres to established production schedules by monitoring work in process and scheduling of direct reports. Implements the safety program as established by SOPs, enforces compliance with all safety rules, ensures hazardous conditions are corrected promptly and works toward eliminating employee injuries. Participates in and actively supports quality projects and activities and Responsible Care Initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.

Pay Range 69,525.00 - 84,975.00
