Position Overview
The Structural Engineer will provide engineering and field oversight in support of the SFHP project at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This position is responsible for managing and monitoring contractor activities related to concrete, steel, and foundation work, as well as performing technical and construction support functions during Title III execution. The successful candidate will combine strong structural design knowledge with field coordination and problem-solving skills to ensure that all work meets project specifications, schedule goals, and quality standards.
The position will begin at the Amentum Idaho Falls office, transitioning to regular onsite support at the INL SFHP job site as construction activities progress.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee contractor activities related to concrete, steel, and foundation work, ensuring compliance with design documents, safety requirements, and project specifications.
Participate in construction planning, field oversight, inspections, and scheduling in collaboration with construction management teams.
Provide technical evaluation and design change support, including:
Dispositioning Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs)
Responding to Requests for Information (RFIs)
Developing and issuing Design Change Notices (DCNs)
Perform design and constructability assessments and support development of Scopes of Work (SOWs) for construction subcontracts in coordination with Procurement and Construction teams.
Coordinate with Quality Assurance on inspections and field verification activities.
Conduct field assessments of existing facilities, including surveys and condition evaluations.
Support conceptual and detailed design activities, including the review of drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical submittals.
Provide engineering assistance during bidding and construction, including:
Reviewing bids and shop drawings
Responding to contractor inquiries
Conducting site visits and progress inspections
Supporting commissioning, progress meetings, and project closeout activities
Interface with other disciplines (civil, architectural, electrical, and mechanical) to produce fully integrated facility designs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution
Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering experience in design, construction support, or field engineering
Thorough knowledge of engineering and construction practices, with the ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical submittals
Strong understanding of structural materials and systems, including reinforced concrete and structural steel design
Excellent communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary project teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience on nuclear, DOE, or industrial facility projects
Familiarity with NQA-1 quality assurance requirements
Experience serving as a Subcontract Technical Representative (STR) or equivalent field engineering role
Working knowledge of cost and schedule management principles
Proficiency in structural analysis and design software (e.g., STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, RISA, or equivalent)
Understanding of federal or DOE construction standards and industrial safety practices
Additional Requirements
Must be a U.S. Citizen (dual citizenship not permitted)
Ability to obtain and maintain a basic security clearance
Ability and willingness to travel (~55 miles) regularly to the INL SFHP site for field oversight and coordination
