Description Public Works Maintenance Worker I (FOG Inspector): Hourly Salary $24.87-$30.24 Maintenance Worker II (FOG Inspector): Hourly Salary $27.36-$33.26 There are no benefits associated with this position. Definition This work is professional in nature and is responsible for assisting with monitoring the discharge of fats, oils and grease (FOG) in the City’s sanitary sewer system. This position will inspect Food Service Establishments and other commercial facilities that are subject to applicable City code requirements for grease source control compliance. Work is performed independently but is reviewed by a supervisor. Nature of Work Work involves inspecting grease traps at restaurants, hotels, bars, fast food businesses and other applicable businesses to ensure no grease is making its way into the sewer lines; documenting inspections; performing follow-up inspections for those that fail; entering reports into the computer; record keeping, and any other duty assigned to support the FOG/pretreatment program. Supervision Receives immediate (Public Works Maintenance Worker I) or general (Public Works Maintenance Worker II) supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. Class Characteristics Public Works Maintenance Worker I : Entry-level classification learning and performing routine semi-skilled tasks in maintenance, repairs, and related public works activities. Journey-level classification performing the full range of duties with independence. Progression is based on performance, qualifications, and management approval. Examples of Duties / Job Functions Essential functions may include but are not limited to the following: Sets up traffic safety control devices, cones, and barricades as necessary. Operates a variety of equipment and vehicles; performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles. Maintains logs, records, and reports of maintenance and repair activities; inputs data into automated software systems. Performs emergency street, sewer, storm drain, or other public works maintenance tasks; responds to hazardous material incidents. Works with grease traps and pretreatment program documentation; conducts inspections and follow-ups as required. Assists with street maintenance, stormwater, and related public works duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge Of Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintenance work. Basic construction and repair methods. Principles and practices of work safety, traffic control, confined space entry, and lockout/tagout. Operations of mechanical equipment used in street, sewer, and drainage maintenance. Standards for traffic signs, pavement markings, and general construction materials. Customer service and effective communication with the public and City staff. English language proficiency and basic computer usage relevant to job duties. Ability To Perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work. Review and complete work orders; operate light and some heavy equipment. Perform heavy manual labor and adapt to field conditions. Obtain required OSHA/Cal/OSHA certifications as provided by the City. Read maps and blueprints; operate tools and equipment safely. Provide training and mentorship as needed; communicate clearly and effectively. Work safely near traffic, in confined spaces, trenches, and other challenging environments. Use computer systems and software to perform work tasks and maintain records. Maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, vendors, contractors, and the public. Education And Experience Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical pathway would be: Education Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Experience Public Works Maintenance Worker I: One (1) year of general maintenance experience. Public Works Maintenance Worker II: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible general maintenance or skilled trades experience, or two (2) years performing duties similar to Public Works Maintenance Worker I with the City of Davis. Licenses And Certifications Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of or successful acquisition within 12 months from date of appointment, a valid Class A or B California Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of or successful acquisition within probationary period, a valid certification in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and AED to be maintained throughout employment. Pesticide Applicator’s license is desirable. Physical Demands Must possess mobility to work in a field environment; ability to perform medium to heavy physical work; lift, carry, push, and pull up to 90 pounds with proper equipment; climb ladders; operate tools and construction equipment; and operate a vehicle. Vision, hearing, and color perception requirements apply; frequent walking in field conditions; ability to read and interpret maps and reports; and perform data entry. PPE must be worn. On Street Maintenance duties, similar lifting requirements apply. Environmental Elements Work in the field with exposure to loud noise, extreme temperatures, weather conditions, road hazards, chemicals, and other hazards. May interact with the public and staff in enforcing policies. Working Conditions May be required to be on-call and to work varying shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
