Part-Time Senior Scientist

The staff scientist and scientific advisor will work in the Environmental Health Services Office team under the Primary Care Health Department. They will have excellent communication and organizational skills, a minimum of a master’s degree in biological, physical or environmental sciences, or a related field. The senior scientist will have experience working with rural Alaskan communities on related issues and project management. The senior scientist will have a broad understanding of ocean and island ecosystems and specific experiences on topics such as spill prevention, solid waste management, harmful algae blooms, environmental education, subsistence and commercial resources and project management and the ability to apply best practices as appropriate in our Region.
Minimum Experience: Master’s degree in biology, physical or environmental sciences or a comparable field. Understanding of ocean and island ecosystems, spill prevention, solid waste, harmful algae blooms, environmental education, subsistence and commercial resources and project management. At least two years of experience working with rural communities, preferably on environmental issues with Alaska Native Tribes. Ability and desire to spend no less than one month per year in the field. Willingness to travel under difficult conditions to remote villages. Excellent writing and communication skills, experienced in leading training sessions, participate in public meetings, speak at national and international conferences and teach class work. Ability to work closely with people from different cultural backgrounds and to enjoy learning and teaching new things every day. Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively manage large budgets. Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize and to focus on meeting project goals. Highly motivated, positive “can do” attitude is necessary. Have a valid Alaska driver’s license. Willing to take training and attend workshops and meetings periodically to enhance job performance and knowledge.
