Job Summary Under limited supervision, performs as lead worker of Staff Dosimetrists in providing comprehensive treatment plans for patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Responsibilities

Compute dose distributions and generate isodose curves for external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy in accordance with departmental procedures and generally accepted dosimetry practices.

Participate in complex situations, localization and immobilization procedures, and fabrication of custom treatment devices.

Design and implement quality assurance procedures in accordance with departmental procedures.

Evaluate patient charts to ensure the treatment plan reflects prescriptions, documentation is complete, and dose calculations are accurate; report dose errors and changes in treatment parameters to the physicist and physician.

Perform verification checks to ensure accuracy of dose calculations; calibrate equipment, collect, and analyze data to verify equipment parameters.

Provide support to physicists in dosimetry calibration, QA, and new procedures; assist with in-vivo patient dosimetry, ensuring proper placement and reading of thermoluminescent dosimeters and solid-state detectors; assist in quality assurance activities with therapy equipment (output checks, energy checks, flatness, symmetry, etc.).

Participate in clinical projects either by committee appointment or designated lead for investigation, implementation, and monitoring of new clinical practices; participate in Quality Improvement projects.

Coordinate brachytherapy procedures: order radioactive sources for permanent and/or temporary implants, schedule events and procedures, maintain source inventory and records; assist physicist in QA checks of brachytherapy devices, generate treatment plans, and perform patient and facility radiation surveys.

Provide leadership and guidance to the dosimetry staff; assist with administrative responsibilities such as performance evaluations, interviews, enforcing departmental rules and regulations; ensure adequate staffing levels; conduct new employee orientation and training; serve on assigned clinical committees.

Attend and participate in in-service and other relevant training courses for professional development; attend dosimetry treatment planning conferences and patient review conferences; take leadership roles in educational programs for technologists, dosimetrists, residents, and medical students; assume instructional responsibilities for Dosimetry Trainees under the direction of the Chief Dosimetrist; mentor medical dosimetry trainees.

Qualifications

Minimum 5 years working as a dosimetrist, or equivalent, with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in physics or related fields; or graduation from an approved Medical Dosimetry Program through the AAMD.

Certification by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB) required.

Minimum 3 years of experience as a dosimetrist in a clinical radiation therapy department.

CPR Certification for Health Care Professionals.

Must obtain required credentials within 2 years of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of anatomy and physiology; understanding physics and dosimetry principles of external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy.

Knowledge of radiation therapy equipment (linear accelerators, simulators, CT simulators); understanding dose measurement instruments and detectors (diodes, ionization chambers, TLDs, film).

Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, medical and nursing personnel.

Demonstrated leadership skills including oversight and coordination of dosimetry workflow, task prioritization, work quality audit, staff orientation and training, and implementation of new procedures with minimal direction.

Ability to work safely with ionizing radiation, observing radiation safety procedures.

Ability to assess patient-specific needs across the lifespan and serve diverse populations.

Maintain competent rating in clinical treatment planning.

Patient Safety

Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.

Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, and devices and communicates findings to those in charge.

Location Baltimore, MD – Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, affiliated with the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Compensation Pay Range: $57.87 - $92.40. Other Compensation (if applicable) as per 2025-2026 UMMS Benefits Guide.
