Job Summary

This position is located at the Central Detention Facility (CDF) or the Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF) at 1901 D Street, SE Washington, DC. The incumbent serves as second in command (Captain) for uniform staff, overseeing a broad range of security operations inside and outside various locations, through subordinate supervisors.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as shift Supervisor (Captain) and maintain overall security of the facility.

Direct and coordinate the correctional program through subordinate supervisory officers.

Participate in training and evaluation of subordinate officers.

Accountable for training and development, performance improvement, and annual evaluation of subordinate supervisory officers.

Submit reports on individual job performance, reprimands, proposed corrective/adverse actions, awards and commendations.

Ensure all posts are properly manned in compliance with duty assignments, especially during emergencies.

Approve adjustments to work schedules, additional correctional officers, or reassignment of staff as needed.

Conduct investigations to uncover adverse penal conditions that affect inmate behavior.

Supervise investigations of all charges against inmates for infractions of rules and determine the disposition of the reports.

Qualifications and Education

At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (Lieutenant) or equivalent supervisory experience with incarcerated individuals.

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction in a supervisory capacity in a team-based environment.

License and Certification

Valid driver’s license.

Eligibility to use a firearm and maintain a license to carry a firearm.

Working Conditions / Environment

Work is performed in a correctional institution. Respond to emergency calls and return to duty as needed.

Other Significant Facts

Tour of Duty: 3 shifts – 7am to 4pm, 4pm to 12am, and 12am to 7am.

Flexible to various work hours, seven days a week, and at various assignment locations.

Pay Plan, Series and Grade: MS-0007-12.

Promotion Potential: No known promotion potential.

Duration of Appointment: Management Supervisory Service (MSS) At-Will.

Collective Bargaining Unit: Position not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

Position Designation: Safety Sensitive, subject to mandatory background checks and drug testing.

Essential Position Designation: Essential to the Agency.

Residency Requirement: Applicants claiming “Residency Preference” must maintain residency in DC for a minimum of 7 years.

A TB Test is required prior to entry on duty.
