What You’ll Do:
Design physical layout plans for 13kV–500kV substations, including equipment location, cable routing, grounding, conduit, and buswork
Perform calculations for grounding systems, lightning protection, clearances, and bus ratings
Select and specify high-voltage equipment such as transformers, breakers, switches, and structures
Coordinate closely with civil/structural, protection & control, and SCADA engineers for cross-disciplinary alignment
Develop construction drawings, BOMs, and design documentation using AutoCAD or MicroStation
Support or lead internal design reviews and provide QA/QC feedback on project deliverables
Conduct site walks, field verifications, and constructability reviews to validate designs
Interpret and apply standards from IEEE, NEC, NESC, ANSI, and utility-specific requirements
Assist in proposals by defining scope, estimating hours, and identifying deliverables
Track project progress and communicate risks or design changes to leadership
Review vendor drawings and peer deliverables for quality and consistency
Reinforce safety awareness in meetings, planning, and design activities
Mentor junior engineers and ensure adherence to internal quality standards
The Experience We’re Looking For:
Engineer III: 5–8 years of substation physical design experience, with some mentoring included
Senior Engineer: 8+ years of physical substation design with project leadership responsibilities
Expertise in high-voltage layout, grounding, lightning protection, and clearance planning
Comfort working with utilities, developers, EPC firms, and interconnection regulations
Experience interpreting PJM, ERCOT, MISO, or other regional operator standards
Strong AutoCAD or MicroStation skills
Ability to manage multiple projects, resolve layout conflicts, and work independently
Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and client interaction skills
Additional Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
Valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record
Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
Willingness to travel up to 75% across the continental U.S.
Bonus Points for:
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
EIT or PE licensure
Experience in training or mentoring junior engineers and leading multidisciplinary teams
Knowledge of RMS Energy clients, standards, or design review processes
