Heavy Equipment Operator or Trainee – Casa Grande

Location: Public Works Yard, Casa Grande
Pay Information: Pay Grade 05 – $34,500.00/yr (Trainee) – Pay Grade 07 – $39,411.00/yr (Operator)
Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee
- Operate a variety of specialized equipment such as light trucks, water trucks, mowers, loaders, and back hoes.
- Perform manual labor tasks, including repairing potholes, clearing debris from culverts and roadways, and setting barricades.
- Assist on assigned projects, making appropriate decisions based on experience.
- Maintain daily logs, reports, and maintenance records.
- Clean and conduct routine maintenance on trucks and equipment, identify mechanical problems, and report issues beyond authority.
- Follow all safety rules, provide proper precautions, and report hazards, equipment problems, and emergencies.
- Execute tasks in the interest of public safety during emergencies and perform traffic control activities as needed.
- Clean up spills and unsafe conditions promptly according to procedures.
- Follow written and verbal instructions closely.
- Promote accountability, commitment, and teamwork to enrich lives beyond expectations.
- Maintain confidentiality of work‑related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Or an equivalent combination of training, education, or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Valid Arizona Driver’s License required within 30 days of hire.
- Must obtain a Class A Arizona State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsements within the first 5 months of employment; failure to maintain the required CDL may be grounds for termination.
Heavy Equipment Operator
- Operate a variety of specialized and heavy equipment to maintain roads, drainage systems, and infrastructure while adhering to safety regulations.
- Work independently using PWD vehicles and motorized equipment including light trucks, water trucks, mowers, loaders, back hoes, graders, dozers, end dumps, and belly dumps for intended purposes.
- Repair roads, spread asphalt, seal cracks, and perform other road maintenance tasks.
- Control ongoing work projects, ensuring safety rules and regulations are followed.
- Perform manual labor tasks such as repairing potholes, clearing debris, and setting barricades.
- Maintain daily logs, reports, and maintenance records; conduct routine maintenance on trucks and equipment and report problems.
- Follow all safety rules and regulations, report hazards and emergencies, and perform traffic control activities as required.
- Comply with written and verbal instructions; promote teamwork, accountability, and commitment.
- Maintain confidentiality of work‑related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Three (3) years of experience in construction, maintenance, and related equipment or one (1) year of experience as a Pinal County Operator (Trainee).
- Must obtain a Class A Arizona State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsements within the first 5 months of employment; failure to maintain the required CDL may be grounds for termination.
- Or an equivalent combination of training, education, or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of construction, maintenance, or related equipment experience.
- CPR/First Aid certified.
- Valid CDL Permit.
- OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification.
- First Aid / CPR / AED training upon hire.
- Basic Work Zone & Traffic Control (Flagger Certification) upon hire.
- May be required to work evenings, nights, and weekends.
Physical Demands
The work requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly to move objects. It also requires balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, reaching, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, performing repetitive motions, walking, operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment, and demonstrating mental and visual acuity. On‑call duty may be required.
Work Environment
Work is performed outdoors in varying weather temperatures.
