Job Location
Position will be located at the Public Works Yard. This recruitment covers both Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee and Heavy Equipment Operator roles.
Job Summary
HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR TRAINEE: Perform entry-level work operating specialized trucks and motorized equipment for Public Works under close supervision. Non-competitive appointment into the Heavy Equipment Operator is contingent on successful completion of required certifications and training.
HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR: Perform skilled and semi-skilled work operating specialized and heavy equipment for Public Works under basic supervision.
Typical Duties
- Operate equipment to maintain roads, drainage systems, and infrastructure following safety regulations.
- Operate PWD vehicles and equipment (light trucks, water trucks, mowers, loaders, back hoes, etc.).
- Perform manual labor tasks, repair potholes, clear debris, and move barricades.
- Maintain logs, reports, and maintenance records; report mechanical problems.
- Follow safety rules and report hazards; assist in traffic control during emergencies; cross-train in PWD methods and safety.
- Maintain confidentiality of work-related information; perform other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee:
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
- Valid Arizona Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
- Must obtain Class A Arizona CDL with tanker endorsements within first 5 months of employment.
Heavy Equipment Operator:
- Three (3) years of construction/maintenance equipment experience OR one (1) year as a Pinal County Operator (Trainee).
- Must obtain Class A CDL with tanker endorsements within first 5 months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of related equipment experience; CPR/First Aid Certified; valid CDL permit.
- OSHA HAZWOPER certification; First Aid/CPR/AED on hire; basic Work Zone/Traffic Control certification.
- Evenings, nights, and weekends may be required.
Special Requirements
- Trainees rehires under 1 year separation go to Trainee until 6 months met; rehires reviewed case by case.
