The Environmental Engineer is responsible for managing environmental compliance, designing and overseeing pollution control systems, and ensuring the facility's operations minimize impact on the surrounding environment. The role combines expertise in engineering, chemistry, and biology to address the unique challenges of wastewater, air quality, and waste management inherent to rendering operations. Environmental compliance and regulations

Serve as the primary liaison between the facility and federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, such as the EPA. Obtain, update, and maintain all required environmental plans, permits, licenses, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Conduct regular environmental audits and site inspections to ensure the facility meets all regulatory requirements and company policies. Prepare and submit comprehensive environmental reports, including discharge monitoring reports (DMRs) and air emissions inventories. Train employees on proper environmental procedures and best practices. Wastewater treatment

Manage the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to process water contaminated during rendering operations. Monitor and analyze wastewater samples to control flows and ensure treated water quality meets regulatory standards before discharge. Troubleshoot operational issues and perform maintenance on WWTP equipment, such as pumps, clarifiers, and filtration systems. Recommend and implement improvements to optimize the treatment process and improve efficiency. Air quality and odor control

Develop and implement strategies to control air pollution and mitigate odors, which are a major concern for rendering plants. Monitor air quality and emission levels, and implement technology such as scrubbers or biofilters to control emissions. Maintain accurate records of all emissions data as required by air permits. Waste and hazardous material management

Manage the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste generated during the rendering process. Coordinate with certified third-party vendors for waste removal and disposal. Develop and oversee a spill prevention and control plan for storing fats, oils, and chemicals. Complete all required manifests and documentation for waste transportation. Project management and long-term strategy

Provide technical support and engineering expertise for environmental remediation projects and capital improvements. Lead new projects to implement sustainable practices and reduce the facility's environmental footprint. Collaborate with other engineers and facility management to ensure environmental goals are integrated into overall operational strategy. Evaluate and implement new environmental technologies that can improve efficiency or reduce pollution. Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field is typically required. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license and relevant certifications (such as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or Wastewater Operator) are often preferred. Proven experience in environmental compliance, preferably within a manufacturing or processing environment. Strong knowledge of environmental regulations from agencies like the EPA and OSHA. Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills to effectively report information to management, regulators, and the public.
