The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) is accepting applications for the position of

Psychiatry Residency Program Director . This position is a full‑time Clinician‑Educator at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor. This role reports directly to the Chair and Vice Chair for Education, and indirectly to the GME and ACGME.

Description Of The Psychiatry Residency Program The Psychiatry Residency program is a 4‑year, ACGME accredited program co‑sponsored by Los Angeles General Medical Center (LAGMC) and USC. The program is highly sought‑after, receiving approximately 1,000 applications for 12 intern slots per year. The program’s mission is to train psychiatrists who are clinical experts and leaders in the care of complex, underserved, ethnically diverse, urban patient populations through supervised and mentored experiences in diverse clinical settings and practices. While LAGMC – one of the largest public safety‑net hospitals in the country – is the primary training site, residents also train at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Hospital, Keck Hospital of USC (a tertiary‑quaternary care private hospital), and USC’s student mental health center. Residents have many opportunities to engage in the teaching and supervision of medical students, and residents are required to complete scholarly projects as part of their training. In the last academic year, 18 residents gave national presentations and/or received national awards or fellowships. Graduates of the program pursue careers in academia, the public sector, and private practice.

Description of the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences Mission: to care for and protect the mental health of our communities. Vision: to drive innovative, leading mental health care by being the place to work, receive care, and create future leaders through learning and discovery. The Department is committed to excellence in clinical care, education, and research. It has grown in its research mission and has expanded its education programming with innovative leaders in curriculum, evaluation, research, and teaching methodology. The Department’s clinical educators and clinical services are fundamental to the academic and training missions. The team offers a range of psychiatric and behavioral health services utilizing the most up‑to‑date research in the field and state‑of‑the‑art technology. Services are primarily provided at LAGMC, USC Student Health, and other Keck Medicine of USC ambulatory practices including Keck Hospital of USC, USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the USC Care Medical Group.

Responsibilities

Direction and oversight of the educational curriculum and maintaining program compliance with ACGME standards including curriculum development, trainee evaluation and feedback, policy development and implementation, monitoring duty hours and trainee wellness, and assessing the clinical competency of each trainee

Approximately 60% administrative time and 40% clinical effort, contingent upon overall percent effort of program and associate program directors

Operational oversight on various functions, including clinical rotations, didactics, assessment, advising, psychotherapy training, research, and scholarship

Lead mission‑driven recruitment and selection of residents into the residency training program

Operational oversight for residents’ comprehensive clinical educational experience

Create and engage in high‑quality educational programs

Strategic planning and development in graduate medical education

Operational oversight on resident well‑being, inclusion, and belonging

Operational oversight on resident recruitment, orientation, training, duty hours, and evaluations

Operational compliance with ACGME standards of curriculum, trainee competency, evaluation and feedback, and policy development and implementation

Serve as a national leader for innovative training models in psychiatric education

Coordinate with clinical leadership across affiliate training sites to ensure compliance

Provide clinical services and direct supervision of residents within a clinical site based on department needs and clinical interests and expertise

Attend Psychiatry Department Grand Rounds, Social Justice Forums, and Department Matters meetings; provide periodic service specific Grand Rounds

Represent the Psychiatry Department and residency program on committees and at meetings as appropriate

Participate in annual faculty merit review and mid‑year performance evaluation processes

Collaborate with clinical and research division leaders to embed high‑quality and innovative clinical and scholarly activities in the residency training program

Other projects and duties, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

At the time of application, candidates must have an MD or related degree and be board certified in general psychiatry and must have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board

Three (3) or more years of psychiatry education program leadership, administration, and teaching in an ACGME accredited training program

Demonstration of outstanding academic accomplishments and trajectory which may include innovative educational program development, excellence in teaching, clinical leadership, or research

Multicultural competency in working with patients of color, patients from all economic classes, LGBTQIA2S+ patients, and international patients

Preferred Qualifications

Effectively works in a highly diverse and multicultural patient population and LGBTQIA2S+ affirmative environment

Commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice and to professional integrity

Desire to continue to grow as a professional and committed to excellence and lifelong learning
