Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, the Assistant Director of Development for Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) and New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) will be responsible for a portfolio of leadership giving donors and major gift prospects ($1K-$25K range), and will work to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward alumni and friends to support fundraising efforts with a focus on alumni and faculty engagement.

Essential Functions

Maintain a portfolio of approximately 75 donors and prospects at the Leadership Gift level (defined as gifts or pledges between $1,000 and $24,999) with responsibility for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a diverse base of supporters, including alumni, donors, and friends.

Actively solicit prospects and donors and meet mutually established goals related to solicitations, gift closures, prospects met, and qualifications. This includes utilizing various giving vehicles, such as in-kind and planned gifts.

Attend school, alumni, and campus functions to develop a strong understanding of the culture of the university, school, alumni, and donor base to cultivate and steward current and prospective donors.

Cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with assigned prospects, department chairs, faculty members, and Rutgers University Foundation development staff to close gifts and meet fundraising objectives; seek and utilize various connections to alumni and friends in order to facilitate meaningful prospect engagement, solicitation, and stewardship.

Lead specifically assigned projects with some oversight by the unit development leaders.

May lead a divisional or sub-unit development program.

May have reporting responsibilities to divisional or sub-unit leader(s).

Autonomy

Manage a personal major gift donor/prospect portfolio with a focus on securing gifts at or above the $25,000 level.

Identify, engage and acquire new prospects for the assigned unit.

Demonstrate mastery to discover, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects with increasing levels of autonomous work.

Complexity

Execute on an annual gifts pipeline strategy and create a major gifts donor pipeline strategy.

Maintain clarity of focus while juggling complex projects or deadlines.

Strategy

Develop and submit written proposals, budgets, and other collateral materials as needed for securing philanthropic investments.

Begin leading strategy sessions.

Education and/or Experience Bachelor's degree and/or 2+ years of professional experience in fundraising, alumni relations, non-profit organizations, event planning, higher education, or related fields.

Working Conditions This position requires clarity of focus while juggling complex projects or deadlines with little physical effort. Work may include evenings, weekends, or odd hours to meet resource-raising commitments. Typical working conditions involve an absence of disagreeable elements. The role requires some early mornings and late evenings to accommodate meetings, travel, events, and external constituents’ schedules.

Workplace Arrangements This is classified as an office-centric hybrid position. Colleagues working under an office-centric hybrid arrangement have a primary workstation in a university or foundation location and are in the office between one and five days a week. The frequency with which they are present in the office depends on their role and function, and the interdependency of other functions.

Compensation and Benefits The position is budgeted at a starting salary of $80,000 per year. Final offers are based on various factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and other job-related reasons for the role.
