Job Responsibilities
Monitor Observation – Continuously observe and accurately recognize actionable conditions on the cardio‑respiratory and video monitors. Detect changes from patient baseline, interpret screens, differentiate artifact from valid waveforms, and ensure timely caregiver response to alarm situations. Validate and document alarm settings, participate in daily reviews with clinical staff, maintain documentation during code situations, monitor sound levels, and coordinate home video connections for families. Give thorough report to covering individuals.
Customer Service – Demonstrate Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) CARES behaviors in all interactions with patients, families, visitors, and co‑workers by providing extraordinary customer service and satisfaction. Interact with parents/guardians to obtain non‑clinical information as requested.
Communication – Promptly and effectively communicate significant cardiopulmonary events or impending safety risks to RN/RT. Keep audio station open during emergencies, seek counsel from clinical staff when alarm parameters need adjustment, provide reports to covering individuals, and document information appropriately in the patient medical record. Utilize SBAR communication technique for alarm status and/or patient status. Respond to phone calls, nurse call system, and other internal and external customers in a clear, concise manner.
Compliance – Understand regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Support leadership in regulatory compliance efforts, maintain certifications and Safety College requirements, and work with managers, nurse council, and magnet representatives to share best practices in safety. Ensure timely, accurate, and secure information (HIPAA, informed consent, advanced directives) as defined by CCHMC mission and applicable laws.
Patient Care – Provide input into the patient’s care plan, anticipate needs, assist in implementation, perform delegated interventions, supervise developmentally appropriate activities, integrate age‑specific and culturally inclusive concepts, use crisis control techniques, and assist with patient transport.
Environment – Adhere to safety procedures suitable for children’s ages and developmental levels. Report malfunctioning equipment and hazards, notify Clinical Engineering of monitor malfunctions, maintain adequate stock and storage of supplies, and ensure work areas are organized and safe for employees, patients, and families. Attend required training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, blood‑borne pathogens, OSHA, and infection control policies.
Fiscal Responsibility – Demonstrate fiscal responsibility and accountability with respect to patient charges and CCHMC charge capture. Perform duties related to charging and reconciling charges as assigned.
Administrative Support – Respond to communication system/patient alarms with urgency, answer the telephone, assemble charts, and stock clerical supplies.
Regulatory Standards – Comply with policies and procedures protecting patient rights for informed consent and handling of confidential information. Respect patient, family, and employee confidentiality and facilitate exchange of appropriate patient care information.
Learning and Development – Participate in staff meetings and unit activities, attend required in‑services, join committees, and seek guidance when needed.
Job Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred: Related hospital experience
Listing on the State of OH State Tested Nurse's Aide (STNA) registry OR EMT/Paramedic experience
Completion of required Cincinnati Children's orientation and CPR training with maintenance of certification
Completion of the CCHMC provided Monitor Tech Class with passing score on written exam and competency demonstration
Listed on Ohio STNA registry OR Ohio CNA; if CNA in another state, must receive reciprocity within 180 days of hire OR listed on Ohio Emergency Medical Services Registry
Preferred: Basic EKG interpretation skills
