Job Summary The Center for Civics, Culture, and Society at Cleveland State University announces multiple openings for full-time tenure-track or tenured faculty positions to begin in August 17, 2026 at the ranks of Assistant, Associate, and/or Full Professor. The Center for Civics, Culture, and Society was created by Cleveland State University and the Ohio General Assembly under Ohio Revised Code, Section 3344.07 and exists “to conduct teaching and research in the historical ideas, traditions, and texts that have shaped the American constitutional order and society.” Successful candidates will be equipped and enthusiastic to teach the Center’s flagship introductory course entitled The American Regime, which covers the philosophical foundations of the United States, the American Founding, questions of equality and civil liberties, economics, religion, and contemporary cultural and political issues relevant to American political society. Required readings include (but are not limited to) The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of the United States, selections from Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations, selections from The Federalist Papers, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and Gettysburg Address, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. Scholars from disciplines such as political science, philosophy, economics, law, history, classics, and literature are encouraged to apply. In addition to teaching The American Regime, successful candidates will teach introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses in their fields, be active scholars, and contribute to the communities of the Center for Civics, Culture, and Society, Cleveland State University, and the Greater Cleveland Area. The teaching load for all full-time positions is 3-3. The Center’s faculty will have access to generous research and travel funding and will be part of a vibrant intellectual community. Minimum Qualifications Assistant Professor: ABD status in a terminal degree program in a field relevant to the Center for Civics, Culture and Society. Persons who are ABD will be hired at the rank of Instructor. A coherent plan for future scholarship. Associate or Full Professor: Conferred terminal degree in a field relevant to the Center for Civics, Culture and Society; A record of scholarly achievement and a coherent plan for future scholarship. Preferred Qualifications Assistant Professor: Conferred terminal degree in a field relevant to the Center for Civics, Culture and Society; Undergraduate teaching experience.
