Job Description

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws, labeling and processing specimens, and ensuring accurate patient data documentation. The role requires adherence to safety protocols, laboratory standards, and compliance regulations while delivering excellent patient service.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, record maintenance data, and update patient information.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture or other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients.
• Demonstrate proper technique using straight and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all physician orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport in compliance with protocol.
• Store specimen samples according to required temperatures and procedures to maintain sample integrity.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results as needed.

Requirements

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required).
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 0–2 years of relevant experience.
