Overview The Packaging Reliability Manager must have the ability to lead, coordinate, and manage the reliability and maintenance programs in a large fast‑paced packaging operation. In this position, the manager will be responsible for managing a team of engineers and maintenance personnel tasked with maintaining a safe, reliable, and efficient packaging operation. The manager will execute structured work processes, preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance strategies required to achieve and sustain both the Reliability Engineering and Maintenance Planning missions and create a proactive culture by developing people to value asset reliability, planning, cost control and Reliability Excellence. The manager reports directly to the Plant Manager and works in a team environment with other department heads.
Detailed Roles & Responsibilities
Oversee the implementation of and maintenance of predictive, corrective, and preventative maintenance programs and other reliability improvement initiatives.
Integrate the use of data analytics and work planning to create a sustainable, reliable maintenance program.
Lead development and continuous improvement of Equipment Maintenance Plans to improve packaging assets, peripheral, and auxiliary equipment required to meet production requirements.
Develop job plans for work orders in support of the Work Execution team that effectively utilize internal labor, materials, and contractors.
Develop, maintain, and integrate SOPs, work instructions, and changeovers using RedZone technology.
Develop and publish weekly work schedule and three‑week rolling forecast to include work backlog.
Ensure effective use and integration of information technologies such as SAP Plant Maintenance, condition monitoring, and other technologies. Ensure all work order job plans have the proper documentation.
Manage the Maintenance Team Manager and their staff to ensure preventive maintenance and work orders are completed in a timely manner.
Work with other department heads on daily and long‑term plans to ensure departmental goals are aligned.
Prepare and administer the department’s daily budget, work with the Packaging Manager and Plant Manager to determine a major repair budget and capital budget for the Packaging Department.
Work closely with the Safety, Environmental and Quality teams to ensure the refinery’s goals in these areas are attained.
Work with the corporate engineering team to develop capital projects, support the installation of new equipment and systems.
Assess obsolescence of equipment and technology advancements in the packaging industry.
Responsible for all maintenance department safety‑related matters.
Provide training and develop employees in technology, work practices, etc.
Build and maintain a team‑oriented philosophy and hold team members accountable for their performance. Provide necessary individual counseling of employees whose performance does not meet acceptable standards and take appropriate actions.
Keep abreast of current laws and changes that may affect the operation of the packaging maintenance department (e.g., ARC Flash, Machine Guarding, Hoist and Rigging, etc.).
Work Experiences
Minimum 7 years’ experience in a high‑speed manufacturing environment – demonstrated leadership and management skills required.
Expertise in multiple areas of maintenance and reliability, controls, electrical, material management, planning and scheduling, and CMMS / EAM / ERP/SAP optimization required.
Experience with the RCM process, failure mode identification, defect analysis, cause and effect analysis, loss elimination, determination of probability, and consequence of failures; along with the use of FMEAs, RCFAs, decision logic, and writing tasks to mitigate identified failures required.
Experience with belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators and cranes, glue pots, pumps, motors, blowers, dust collection, packaging robots.
Food manufacturing experience preferred.
Experience with SAP and SAP maintenance module preferred.
Experience in managing projects and working with both vendors and contractors.
Be familiar with all federal, state and local environmental programs such as Title 5, SPCC, and hazmat.
Education Requirements
Degree in Engineering: B.Ch.E., BSEE, BSME.
MBA or master’s degree in engineering preferred.
PE preferred.
Supervisory Responsibility
1-5 salaried direct reports, 8-12 salaried indirect reports, 50+ hourly indirect reports.
