MaryAnn Markowitz & Associates
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Our confidential client, a well‑established and financially stable company in Uptown Houston, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Accountant to join their growing finance team. Reporting directly to the VP Controller (CPA with 10+ years at a Big 4 firm and extensive PE-backed company experience), this role is critical to elevating the technical capabilities of the accounting department.
This is NOT an FP&A or financial analyst role. We need someone who loves the precision and detail of month‑end close, journal entries, account reconciliations, and technical accounting. If you're looking to do forecasting, budgeting, or strategic analysis, this isn't the right fit.
The VP Controller is building a best‑in‑class accounting team and needs someone with strong public accounting audit fundamentals who can bring technical rigor, process improvement thinking, and professional presence to the department. The existing team of 7‑8 accountants has solid industry experience but limited exposure to Big 4 / national firm standards. Your role will be to raise the bar.
THE ROLE As Senior Accountant, you will own critical accounting functions in the monthly close process, ensure GAAP compliance, and partner directly with the VP Controller to implement process improvements and mentor the broader team. This is a hands‑on role for someone who takes pride in producing clean, accurate, audit‑ready financial statements.
Key Responsibilities
Own the monthly and year‑end close processes with precision and attention to detail
Prepare and post complex journal entries —you know GAAP inside and out and can make entries confidently
Lead account reconciliations and variance analysis to Big 4 audit standards
Ensure proper revenue recognition, expense classification, and accrual accuracy
Prepare audit‑ready financial statements and support external audit processes
Collaborate with the VP Controller on accounting policy decisions and technical research
Mentor and elevate the technical capabilities of the accounting teamDrive process improvements and automation within the QuickBooks environment
Take ownership of special projects including technical accounting research and implementation
Required Qualifications
5+ years of total accounting experience including 2-3 years in public accounting AUDIT (Big 4, national, or large regional firm)
CPA or active CPA candidate (must have passed at least 2 exams)
Strong technical GAAP knowledge —you can make journal entries, prepare financial statements, and research technical issues independently
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills —you can hold your own in meetings, present findings clearly, and collaborate effectively
Proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks (or similar accounting systems)
A genuine interest in transactional accounting and month‑end close processes (not FP&A or analysis)
Compensation & Benefits
Salary : $95,000+ (commensurate with experience)
Three weeks vacation plus four days PTO (accrues immediately)
Health, dental, and vision insurance
$75 / month cell phone allowance
