About the Department The Section of Transplantation is built on a strong history of surgical excellence, including the first-ever animal organ transplant in 1904. Over the years, the section has achieved many more firsts, including the first successful living donor liver transplant and the first heart‑liver‑kidney transplant in the world. Today, UChicago Medicine is home to one of the busiest organ transplant centers in the nation and offers more transplant options than any other program in Illinois. Our researchers are well known for basic science research in transplantation tolerance and clinical trial work around islet cell transplantation for diabetes.

Job Summary The role manages and supervises a team of professional staff responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management for Transplant Surgery.

Responsibilities

Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills and knowledge to provide assessment, evaluation, testing, treatment, therapies, medical management, and other direct care to patients under the care of the University of Chicago Medicine.

Takes patient histories, conducts examinations, diagnoses illnesses, orders and interprets laboratory tests, performs specified diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and develops and implements comprehensive care plans for patients.

Collaborate and/or consult with physicians and other health‑care providers as appropriate.

Participate in activities that contribute to the education of healthcare professionals, including one‑on‑one education, group education, formal presentations, and/or publishing.

Assume accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority, prescribing appropriate treatments, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient.

Keep knowledge base current by reading professional literature and attending educational conferences.

Partner with the Section Chief and the Vice President of the Transplant Institute to set goals and assess performance of the APP team.

Manage the APP team schedule and facilitate appropriate cross‑training to ensure planned and unplanned absences have comprehensive coverage for safe patient care.

Develop policies and procedures related to patient care by following established applicable best practice guidelines.

Monitor specific needs for self‑development and implement a plan to achieve professional growth and networking. Promote the professional growth of APPs through coaching, mentoring, and support.

Develop and implement best practices relevant to integrated APP practice and develop at‑risk metrics. Identify system and service‑specific clinical performance goals.

Manage leadership and business development skills to accomplish inpatient and outpatient patient care mission, goals, and strategic plan. Initiate and maintain an organizational structure for the APPs and create a culture that facilitates collaboration and participation. Ensure the delivery of quality and cost‑effective patient care by working collaboratively with the APPs in ambulatory and inpatient settings.

Perform other related work as needed.

Education

Minimum: college or university degree in a related field.

Preferred: an advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC‑PA).

Work Experience

Minimum: knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred: progressively responsible leadership and supervisory experience in a clinical setting.

Licenses and Certifications

Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.
