Associate Vice President and Managing Director / Managing Senior Director of Development – Wisconsin Medicine We are recruiting a Managing Senior Director of Development or Associate Vice President and Managing Director to lead a dynamic team of major‑gift fundraisers and evaluate strategic priorities that move the needle for research, education, and patient care across the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and UW Health.

This senior leadership role involves collaborating with visionary leaders, driving innovative fundraising strategies, and shaping the future of UW Medicine.

Essential Functions

Serve on the WI Medicine Leadership team, share best practices across divisions, and model a high level of collaboration.

Grow and develop the team by supporting professional growth, encouraging continuous learning, and enhancing program success.

Manage workflow, define roles and responsibilities, and create training opportunities.

Provide leadership and support to empower team members to achieve individual and programmatic goals.

Drive innovation and idea generation: build the case for support around strategic priorities, expand high‑utility, unrestricted funding priorities, assess challenges, implement solutions, and develop objectives and strategies for major gift development.

Collaborate with campus leaders, VP/MGL, WFAA leaders, and WI Medicine colleagues to build priorities, share donor insights, and coordinate activities on shared prospects.

Partner with the Wisconsin Medicine principal gifts team and the Vice President of PG prospects; ensure success of large fundraising initiatives and prepare for future comprehensive campaigns.

Implement development strategies with assigned constituencies, managing a portfolio of prospects and major gift donors to advance them strategically through the development process.

Work with research, prospect development, and business intelligence teams to identify and qualify major gift prospects.

Communicate, problem‑solve, and anticipate needs of campus partner programs regarding accounting for donor‑created funds.

Plan and conduct trips, events, and engagement opportunities to build relationships and present the case for philanthropic support.

Develop and present major and principal gift opportunities, articulating the vision and priorities of Wisconsin Medicine.

Ask for the right gift, at the right time, in the right way.

Qualifications

Minimum of 5+ years of experience in fund‑raising or a related capacity.

Minimum of 1+ year in a team leadership or supervisory role.

Superior communication and interpersonal skills, including oral, written, analytical, and organizational abilities.

Experience and demonstrated success in fundraising or related activities.

Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.

Additional Requirements for Associate Vice President / Managing Director

10+ years of professional leadership experience in complex development programs (preferably within health care/medicine).

2+ years of proven supervisory and management skills, both strategic and operational, with a track record of building, managing, mentoring, and motivating effective teams.

Demonstrated success in soliciting, closing, and stewarding major gifts of $1 million or more; strong proficiency with high‑net‑worth donors.

Ability to articulate the vision and case for philanthropy for SMPH and UW Health and represent the broader UW Madison community.

Credibility, maturity, and sound judgment that inspire trust among academic leaders, donors, and colleagues.

Political savvy to navigate a complex academic community and build strong collaborative relationships.

Other Qualifications

Ability to articulate the case for private support with sufficient effectiveness.

Ability to work independently and as part of a development team.

Prior experience leading medicine or health‑care development teams.

Prior experience within an academic medical center or health system.
