Assistant Dean – Small Animal Hospitals
(1.0 FTE; 75‑80% administrative, 20‑25% academic)
Job Description The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks an Assistant Dean of Small Animal Hospitals (ADSAH) to provide leadership, oversee medical care, and guide strategic operations for the Small Animal Hospitals (SAH) in Gainesville and UF Pet Emergency and Treatment Services (UFPETS) in Ocala.
Essential Functions
Responsible for the Patient Quality and Safety (PSQ) program
Coordinate with Risk Manager and Safety Officer to evaluate safety concerns and develop mitigation initiatives.
Promote Just Culture.
Provide PQS quarterly reports to the Hospital Board.
Supervise the Patient Quality & Safety Officer and Risk Manager.
Assist Service Chiefs in addressing patient quality and safety issues.
Assist the Client Service Manager in resolving client concerns.
Chair and oversee the SAH Infection Control program with the Infection Control Committee and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee.
In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Clinical Services – SA (ADCS – SA), review performance of small animal clinical faculty to ensure efficient management of the UFVH.
Oversee and manage Pet Samaritan Funds.
Ensure compliance with medical record documentation in the UF SAH per Clinician Handbook.
Work with the Medical Director (House Officers) to address issues arising with interns, residents, and fellows.
Collaborate with ADCS – SA, medical directors, and Service Chiefs to optimize clinic schedules, on‑call schedules, develop policies and protocols, and address faculty or house‑officer welfare and behavior concerns.
Substitute for ADCS – SA when necessary.
Attend Service Chiefs’ meetings regularly.
Assist ADCS – SA with faculty wellness initiatives.
Participate in developing and implementing strategic initiatives/projects for the UFVH.
Ensure compliance with federal/state veterinary practice regulations and College/University policies.
Serve on the Hospital Board and Hospital Management Council.
Additional Responsibilities
Take responsibility for assigned projects.
Promote high‑quality veterinary care and excellent customer service.
Advocate the university’s philosophy, values, and mission.
Uphold the mission and values of the UFVH.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Selection Criteria
Establish and maintain effective working relationships and customer satisfaction with stakeholders.
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills that are clear, constructive, and timely.
Team‑building and collaborative decision‑making.
Develop and encourage effective relationships between clinicians and staff.
Knowledge of integrated professional, technical, and administrative principles of clinical practice.
Foster a cooperative work environment.
Provide clinical guidance and leadership; give meaningful feedback to faculty/house officers.
Plan and implement short‑ and long‑term goals.
Required Qualifications
DVM, VMD, or equivalent foreign veterinary degree.
At least six years of clinical experience and three years of leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience managing veterinary hospital operations in an academic or private setting.
Demonstrated leadership potential and ability to supervise professional employees effectively.
