Carbonated Inc.
Carbonated is a passionate game studio founded in 2015 by industry veterans from companies like EA, Sony and Zynga, and we’re proud to be backed by top investors such as a16z, Bitkraft and Com2Us.
Our culture is centered around a love for playing and creating games, and a drive to constantly experiment and innovate. At Carbonated, we’re building something together that we’re all proud of, and creating a company where people can thrive throughout their careers. We’re looking for individuals who align with our core values:
Talent: You’re a subject matter expert and an outstanding individual contributor. Attitude: You bring positivity and dedication, willing to invest the effort to achieve great results. Curiosity: You’re eager to explore new ideas and technologies to create something truly innovative.
Role We’re building a high-octane mobile shooter that redefines what’s possible on a phone. As a Gameplay Engineer, you own the player experience — from core mechanics to moment-to-moment feel. You’ll work hand-in-hand with designers and artists to design, prototype, and ship gameplay systems that are responsive, satisfying, and technically bulletproof. No fear of complex state machines, animation blending, input systems, or performance bottlenecks. You see a design doc and think: How do I make this feel amazing?
You live in the gameplay layer — but you’re not afraid to debug a physics glitch, profile a frame drop, or hack a tool to unblock the team.
Responsibilities Partner with design to rapidly prototype and iterate on core gameplay systems (movement, shooting, abilities, progression, etc.) Implement rock-solid mechanics in C++ using O3DE — clean, modular, and optimized for mobile Own player feel: input latency, animation responsiveness, hit feedback, camera behavior Ship features end-to-end — from concept to live ops tuning Conduct code reviews, enforce best practices, and mentor junior engineers Challenge everything: Push back on bad ideas, propose better ones, and fight for quality
What we’re looking for A fearless gameplay engineer who lives for feel — you know when a mechanic is 90% vs. 100% Obsessed with player experience and technical excellence in equal measure Thrive in fast iteration cycles — you prototype in hours, not weeks Comfortable owning systems end-to-end, from design handoff to post‑launch tuning Not afraid to disagree, debate, and defend what makes the game better At your best when collaborating closely with designers, animators, and QA Love finding clever solutions to hard problems (e.g., “How do we make 60fps headshots feel crisp on a mid‑tier phone?”)
Required skills 5+ years professional mobile game development experience Multiple shipped mobile titles (bonus: shooters or action games) 5+ years C/C++ in production game code Deep experience with gameplay systems: character controllers, weapons, abilities, UI logic, state machines Strong OOP design and ability to write clean, maintainable systems Proven cross-discipline collaboration (you speak “designer” and “artist” fluently) Ability to own a feature from concept to live Proficient in Agile/Scrum
Extra credit Hands‑on with O3DE (or deep Unreal/CryEngine experience) Familiar with Git, Visual Studio, Xcode Built multiplayer gameplay systems or live ops features Experience optimizing for mobile GPU/CPU constraints You’ve mentored or led gameplay initiatives You play mobile shooters religiously
