Summary The

Director of Transportation

is responsible for leading and managing our transportation operations. This ideal candidate will be highly organized and results-driven and responsible for overseeing daily logistics, managing carrier relationships, optimizing freight costs, and ensuring compliance with all transportation regulations. The Director of Transportation will work closely with supply chain, distribution, and customer service teams to ensure timely, cost-effective, and efficient delivery of goods.

Essential Job Functions Strategic & Operational Oversight

Lead the development and execution of transportation strategies to support company goals related to cost, service, and sustainability.

Oversee all modes of transportation, including truckload (TL), less-than-truckload (LTL), parcel, intermodal, and international shipments.

Monitor transportation KPIs and performance metrics to ensure service excellence and identify areas for improvement.

Collaborate with distribution centers and supply chain planning teams to align transportation schedules with demand forecasts.

Select, negotiate, and manage contracts with carriers, 3PLs, and freight forwarders.

Build strong partnerships to ensure service reliability, rate competitiveness, and compliance with service level agreements.

Resolve carrier performance issues and implement corrective actions when needed.

Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and other relevant local, state, federal, and international regulations.

Implement risk mitigation strategies related to transportation safety, liability, and cargo security.

Technology & Process Improvement

Utilize and continuously improve Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and related logistics technology tools.

Leverage data and analytics to drive informed decision-making and operational efficiency.

Lead or support Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement initiatives related to logistics and freight management.

Manage and develop a high-performing transportation team, including managers, analysts, and coordinators.

Provide coaching, training, and performance evaluations to drive team growth and engagement.

Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and operational excellence.

Education / Training / Experience

Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, logistics, business, or a related field (Master’s or MBA a plus).

7–10 years of progressive experience in transportation or logistics, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.

Deep knowledge of domestic and international transportation practices.

Proven ability to manage transportation budgets and vendor negotiations.

Experience with TMS platforms (e.g., Oracle, SAP, Manhattan, MercuryGate) and strong Microsoft Excel/analytics skills.

Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.

Compensation The salary range for this position is $120,000.00 to $150,000.00 annually. The actual starting pay will be determined by a number of qualifications, including experience and relevant skills.
