Job Title TPWD - Park Ranger I (Park Interpreter)

Overview Under the direction of the Park Superintendent, this position performs routine (journey-level) State Parks operations work and is responsible for the interpretation and preservation of Mother Neff State Park. The role promotes conservation and stewardship of natural and cultural resources, interprets the park’s historical significance and biodiversity to various audiences, and engages the public through programs, tours, hikes, special events and outreach initiatives.

Responsibilities

Perform routine State Parks operations work.

Interpret and preserve the natural and cultural resources of Mother Neff State Park.

Conduct interpretive programs, tours, hikes, and special events for diverse audiences.

Develop and implement outreach programs with schools, civic groups, scouts, and other organizations.

Assist with promotional efforts through social media and other marketing outlets.

Manage the volunteer program, including day volunteers and park hosts.

Work under moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.

Perform additional duties as assigned and comply with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

No prior experience required.

Valid State driver’s license at the time of hire.

Acceptable Substitutions

One year of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum of 120 semester hours.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Park Administration, Recreation and Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Geology, Anthropology/Archeology, History, or a closely related field.

Experience in customer service, park operations, and interpretation or conducting educational programs.

Certified Interpretive Guide, Certified Interpretive Host, or similar certification from the National Association for Interpretation (NAI).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of natural and cultural resources management, special event planning, park operations and maintenance, park administration principles, and methods of interpretation and education.

Basic mathematics and standard financial and business management principles.

Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to perform interpretive techniques, program preparation, and presentations.

Strong customer service skills and ability to establish effective work relationships.

Planning, organizing and implementing public presentations and guided tours for various age groups.

Facilitation of meetings and general maintenance techniques.

Teamwork, cash handling, permit issuance, flexibility to work with frequent interruptions, and ability to train others.
