Job Title High School English Teacher
Reports to Principal
Primary Role And Purpose The teacher collaborates with administration and colleagues to nurture a culture of high expectations for learning and behavior grounded in the school’s core values. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, delivering instruction to an assigned group of students, and fostering ownership and collaboration among students, parents, and community to support academic and emotional success. The teacher models professional integrity and respect for students, families, and colleagues.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Foster a culture of high expectations for learning and behavior founded on Quest Charter Academy’s core values.
Maximize class‑time learning by establishing clear expectations and communication processes.
Create a learning community where students assume responsibility, participate in decision‑making, cooperate and work independently, and engage in purposeful activities.
Make decisions that enhance social relationships, motivation, and engagement.
Manage time, materials, and space to provide active and equitable student engagement.
Demonstrate effective behavior‑management techniques suitable for all students, including those with special needs.
Establish clear learning expectations.
Choose and adapt teaching strategies and materials to meet individual student needs and instructional purposes.
Engage students in active learning that promotes critical thinking and problem solving.
Adjust instruction based on performance feedback.
Facilitate inclusion of special‑needs students.
Use technology to enhance learning and achieve instructional objectives.
Analyze assessment data to diagnose learning needs, refine instruction, and design teaching strategies.
Encourage students to self‑assess and set learning goals.
Maintain accurate records of student work and share progress with students, parents, and colleagues.
Leverage technology for progress monitoring.
Evaluate teaching resources and curriculum for accuracy and usefulness.
Integrate multiple viewpoints, theories, and inquiry methods in lessons.
Link lessons to other content areas, life, and career contexts.
Stimulate student reflection on prior knowledge and connect new ideas to familiar ones.
Adjust complexity to meet student development levels and diverse learning needs.
Demonstrate positive regard for all students and families, respecting cultural, religious, gender, LGBTQ+, and ability diversity.
Use familial and community information to tailor instruction.
Employ effective questioning to encourage discussion.
Provide opportunities for expressive communication across modalities.
Offer constructive feedback and support.
Employ listening, conflict‑resolution, and facilitation skills.
Communicate with parents in a timely, effective manner.
Collaborate with colleagues to develop a conducive learning culture.
Engage in shared decision‑making and problem‑solving.
Build relationships with parents and guardians for holistic support.
Partner with community resources to promote learning, career exploration, and well‑being.
Use observation, student data, research, and pedagogy for reflective practice and instructional improvement.
Seek professional development and feedback opportunities.
Maintain integrity and follow school policies and professional conduct.
Lead or participate in curriculum development, staff training, and extracurricular activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a job‑related field from an accredited institution.
Teaching certifications relevant to responsibilities.
Proficient written and oral English communication.
Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
Clear criminal record history (background check cleared).
Pass required state tuberculosis test.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience teaching in an urban setting.
Experience in a charter‑school environment.
Responsibilities
Work schedule: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.
Coach a group of students for the annual School Project Fair (subject areas include science, math, English, art, social studies, technology).
Attend subject‑related competitions and events.
Supervise or organize field trips as assigned.
Participate in staff meetings, professional development, grade‑chair, and department‑head meetings.
Write and align curriculum; implement the curriculum provided by Quest Charter Academy.
Submit weekly lesson plans and grades for report cards on time.
Mentor assigned teachers; new teachers join the new‑teacher mentoring program and participate in summer and monthly professional development.
Visit all advisory families during the first semester and complete standard forms afterward.
Offer after‑school tutoring and participate in clubs or special‑interest groups.
Serve as an advisor to a group of students; hold weekly motivational meetings.
Attend Department Meetings and retreats; full‑day Saturday meetings may be out of town, but all expenses are covered by the school.
Attend parent/teacher conferences; be available after school or on Saturdays.
Attend open house events for prospective parents when assigned.
Chaperone or organize school activities such as dances or fundraising events.
Supervise lunch, hallways, and other common areas when assigned.
Use the online grade book and update it daily; grades must remain current.
Maintain continuous communication with parents through calls, correspondence, and meetings.
Attend subject‑related conferences as requested; conference duration may be up to 2 days with a Saturday; if out of town, all expenses are paid by the school.
Perform any other duties assigned by administrators.
