Research Associate – Economic Governance United Nations University Institute in Macau

Overview Position based in New York, reporting to United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU‑CPR) and United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU‑WIDER). Occasional travel to Helsinki may be required.

Responsibilities

Research and writing: conduct empirical research through literature reviews, expert interviews, qualitative and quantitative analysis; produce policy reports, technical notes and publications.

Support finalisation and publication of UNU‑CPR and UNU‑WIDER research products.

Attend thematic briefings, policy processes and events, summarising developments and policy entry points.

Engage with UN offices, agencies, member states and experts on global governance and economic governance reforms.

Coordinate and represent UNU at workshops and events on global governance innovation.

Assist with content for social media posts, dissemination of research and fundraising materials.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

Master’s degree or equivalent in Public Policy, International Affairs, Economics, Political Science or other relevant social sciences.

At least two years of progressively responsible experience in research and writing on economic governance, global governance or international financial architecture.

Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Experience drafting complex reports and tracking intergovernmental processes.

Experience with stakeholder engagement and event organization.

Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills.

International experience and readiness to travel internationally.

Excellent drafting skills and fluency in English; knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.

Remuneration The successful candidate will be employed under a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract with an annual net salary in the range of USD 60,000 – 63,304, commensurate with experience. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and a health insurance scheme.

Duration of Contract Initial period of 6 months, renewable subject to performance; total PSA duration may not exceed six (6) years. Mandatory retirement age 65.

Starting Date Early December 2025.
