Correctional Officer 3 – State of West Virginia Apply for the Correctional Officer 3 role at the State of West Virginia. This role is a full‑time position in a mid‑senior level with a focus on correctional security, training, and supervisory responsibilities.

Nature of Work Under general supervision, serves as a lead worker of Correctional Officers. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and reviewing the work of other officers to ensure facility security. The role may also involve supervisory oversight of K‑9 handlers and instrumental in securing corrections facilities.

Responsibilities Conduct orientation and on‑job training of Correctional Officers.

Read and implement training materials, post orders, and administrative regulations.

Provide guidance and direction to subordinate officers.

Monitor the performance of subordinate officers and assign units as necessary.

Obtain information from previous shift reports.

Assist with offender intake/discharge procedures.

Observe offenders to detect unusual behavior and maintain custody and control.

Train officers to conduct offender counts, escort/transport, and contraband searches.

Instruct offenders in assigned tasks.

Maintain public safety by enforcing rules and reporting violations.

Testify in disciplinary hearings and court.

Respond to offender requests and complaints appropriately.

Model positive personal and social living skills with offenders.

Prepare officers for emergencies such as fires or escapes.

Operate security, communications equipment, and firearms.

Conduct incident investigations as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of correctional security, treatment, and support programs.

Knowledge of rules, regulations, and state law.

Skill in locating and identifying contraband.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to train subordinate officers on rules, regulations, and law.

Ability to lead subordinate staff and offender activities.

Ability to resolve conflicts and follow written and oral direction.

Ability to interact positively with staff, inmates, and the public.

Physical capability to restrain violent residents.

Ability to use appropriate force and handle weapons, chemical agents, and restraints.

Ability to conduct contraband searches and write routine reports.

Ability to read, understand, and apply training materials.

Ability to perform specialized assignment tasks.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent (training).

Two (2) years full‑time or part‑time paid experience as a Correctional Officer, probation/parole officer, U.S. Military service, police officer, or in a criminal justice or related field.

Alternatively, substitute completed coursework from an accredited college or university in corrections, criminal justice, or related field (one (1) year for every thirty (30) semester hours).

Conditions of Employment

Must complete a psychological examination before and as required thereafter.

Must complete a medical examination before and as required thereafter.

Must complete a physical performance test before appointment and annually thereafter.

Must complete a chemical urinalysis drug‑screening test before initial employment; random drug testing is mandatory.

Background and suitability must be verified through an agency investigation.

Clear of felony convictions and PRERA prohibited activity; subject to recurring background checks.

Work various shifts; schedules are subject to change and mandatory overtime is required.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Must maintain a working telephone for contact and complete training as required by policy.

Must complete a Supervisor Training Course within six (6) months of reallocation.

Additional Information

Annual base building pay differential of $250 starting July 1, 2024.

Critical vacancy pay differential adjustments as applicable.
