Position title:

Lecturer

Salary range:

$79,887 – $128,194 annually, depending on experience. Appointments are typically 25% time for 2‑unit courses, 33% time for 3‑unit courses, and 42% time for 4‑unit courses, for a period of 5 months. Salary increases in subsequent terms pursuant to the labor contract.

Percent time:

12.5% – 100%

Anticipated start:

Positions typically start in January, August, or occasionally June.

Position duration:

Initial up to one year, with possible renewal based on need, funding, and performance.

Post‑graduate and undergraduate courses in the Master of Information Management and Systems program (online or in‑person as needed).

Position description

The School of Information at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of part‑time, non‑tenure‑track lecturers to teach on‑campus courses in the Master of Information Management and Systems. Exceptional instructors with professional and/or academic expertise are sought to teach doctoral and master’s level students, other UC Berkeley graduate students, and select undergraduate courses. Screening is ongoing and the number of positions varies by semester.

Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. This is a primarily in‑person role requiring campus presence, with alternative modalities authorized if necessary.

Important note : No funding is available for visa sponsorship or relocation expenses.

About The I School

The Berkeley School of Information (I School) offers three professional master’s degrees (MIMS, MIDS, MICS) and an academic Ph.D. Program. Responsibilities

Design and deliver engaging, in‑person courses emphasizing active learning, discussion, group activities, and hands‑on exercises.

Create a comprehensive syllabus outlining objectives, assessments, assignments, and expectations.

Provide individualized support through office hours, meetings, and guidance to promote student success.

Develop and update instructional materials, assignments, and assessments, ensuring alignment with program goals and inclusivity.

Deliver timely, constructive feedback on student work to support mastery of course competencies.

Manage course operations, including scheduling, grading policies, and classroom logistics.

Collaborate with instructional teams during meetings to share strategies and maintain instructional alignment.

Promote an inclusive, equitable learning environment respectful of diverse perspectives.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).

Additional qualifications (required at time of start):

Minimum 4 years professional experience in the field, and minimum 2 years teaching in higher education or relevant professional development, including workshops, executive education, or industry programs.

Preferred qualifications:

Advanced degree in Information, Information Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Political Science, Sociology, Law, Economics, Human‑Computer Interaction, or Design.

10+ years of professional experience in the aforementioned fields.

Multiple years of demonstrated excellence in teaching college‑level courses.

Familiarity with collaborative learning techniques and student‑centered instruction.

Organizational skills and the ability to complete assignments timely with minimal supervision.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to engage students with diverse skill levels.

Excellent interpersonal and customer‑service skills; demonstrated strength or potential in college‑level teaching.

Ability to support diverse communities through inclusive curriculum and pedagogy.

Professional and teaching experience in at least one core area (e.g., Algorithmic Fairness, Blockchain, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, HCI, Machine Learning, NLP, AI ethics, etc.).
