Compensation The current minimum salary for Senior Stationary Engineer is $87.71 per hour for a 40‑hour week. This rate is subject to change.
The benefits include night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a comprehensive medical plan, and a pension plan.
Responsibilities Senior Stationary Engineers, under direction, are responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of all utilities in large public buildings and of steam power plants, chillers, swimming pools and skating rinks.
They are responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment such as boilers, furnaces, pumps, fans, engines, turbines, generators, electrical equipment, heating and ventilating equipment, and air conditioning and refrigeration systems; may operate or supervise the operation of control consoles in control rooms.
They are responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment in swimming pools and skating rinks; supervise assigned personnel; prepare work schedules and direct the assignment of personnel; direct and evaluate studies of operating procedures; determine and direct work procedures; keep records and write reports;
Their duties may also include operating a motor vehicle, planning, allocating and maintaining inventory and supplies for preventative and emergency maintenance needs; preparing equipment and material requisitions, vendor bids, and scope of work for vendor contracts.
All Senior Stationary Engineers perform related work.
Special Working Conditions: may be required to work nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Physical activities and environmental conditions include communicating orally in a noisy environment, climbing stairs, ladders, and over equipment, standing upright for extended periods, walking over wet and slippery surfaces, and working on surfaces at substantial height.
Eligibility and License Requirements (Promotional)
Permanently employed in the eligible title of Stationary Engineer (not provisionally).
Possesses a valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings.
Is not otherwise ineligible.
Experience and License Requirements (Open Competitive)
One year of full‑time experience as a stationary engineer in charge of a high pressure plant supervising at least three stationary engineers.
A valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings, maintained for the duration of employment.
Selection Method / Admission Letter Candidates may be asked to participate in one or more of the following: a license and experience test, a written assessment, a practical skills assessment and/or a structured interview.
