Job Description
Under general direction, perform professional engineering work in the field and office; supervise engineering personnel, including consultants.
Execute difficult and responsible engineering tasks and lead engineering efforts across assigned projects.
Essential Functions
Supervise professional and technical engineering staff, consultants, and related project teams; assign and review work.
Select, train, motivate, monitor, evaluate, and counsel staff.
Analyze workloads and budgets; oversee document preparation; review and analyze bids for specification conformance; negotiate contract terms and resolve claims.
Supervise and monitor field inspections and organize inspection staff activities.
Advise operating staff on water/wastewater treatment goals and process optimization; participate in scientific research on treatment impacts.
Prepare and review engineering designs, drawings, and specifications; perform complex engineering calculations.
Review federal, regional, and local regulations affecting engineering work.
Analyze and solve complex engineering and process‑related problems.
Write, review, and approve departmental correspondence, reports, and related documents; conduct meetings and present to staff, committees, agencies, clients, and the public.
Serve as a project engineer or resident engineer for complex projects.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Five (5) years of verifiable professional Mechanical Engineering experience, including at least two (2) years equivalent to City and County of San Francisco class 5207 Associate Engineer or higher.
Current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering in the State of California.
Substitutions / Notes
Candidates licensed in other states who meet the minimum requirements may file for this examination; if successful, they will be placed on the eligible list until the required California license is presented.
There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5207 Associate Engineer or higher.
As a new recruitment for this classification will open shortly after the eligible list for this announcement has been adopted, there is no general waiver available for City and County of San Francisco employees who have six (6) months of experience as a 5207 Associate Engineer but less than the required experience to be admitted to the exam process.
License or Certificate Some positions may require a valid driver license.
Working Conditions Positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to various weather conditions outdoors; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods; and operating on specific schedules that may include weekends, holidays, part time, nights, and/or overtime.
