Hickok Waterman Tax
Role:
Client Accounting & Advisory Lead
Location:
Santa Rosa, CA (Primarily Onsite, with Hybrid Flexibility)
Are you an experienced accountant who loves advising businesses but feels trapped in the endless, backward-looking grind of the month-end close? What if you could join a firm that uses AI and automation to handle the \"grunt work,\" freeing you to focus on high-impact strategic advice?
At Hickok Waterman Tax, we are a forward-thinking advisory firm serving the dynamic needs of
wineries, tech companies, real estate investors, and other high-growth businesses around the San Francisco Bay Area.
We are now expanding our Client Accounting & Advisory Services (CAAS) practice. This is a unique opportunity to grow in a new service line while being a key partner in shaping the next-generation tools that will run it.
Your Mission: Lead with Insight, Advise with Confidence As our Client Accounting & Advisory Lead, your primary role is to be the year-round, trusted financial guide for our business clients. You'll ensure their financial operations are seamless and, most importantly, you'll translate their financial data into actionable, forward-looking advice.
Lead Client Advisory Engagements:
Serve as the fractional controller and strategic advisor for a foundational portfolio of our business clients.
Deliver Actionable Insights, Not Just Reports:
Use our tech-enabled platform to go beyond historical reports. You'll spend your time delivering forward-looking advice on cash flow, budgeting, KPI analysis, and strategic planning.
Master the Modern Accounting Stack:
You will be our expert in the cloud accounting ecosystem (QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Ramp, Gusto), managing the systems that provide real-time data to our clients.
Partner with Our Tech Team to Improve Our Tools:
You won't have to build the technology, you'll just get to make it better. As the primary \"subject matter expert,\" you'll provide critical feedback on our developing AI tools and workflows, ensuring the platform we build actually makes an accountant's life easier.
Integrate with Tax Strategy:
Work hand-in-hand with our client service \"pods\" and tax teams to ensure your year-round accounting work is perfectly aligned with their tax strategies, providing a single, holistic financial picture.
What You Bring This role is for a tech-savvy accounting leader with a \"builder's mindset,\" a passion for client service, and a talent for translating financial data into a simple, compelling story.
Active CPA or EA license preferred.
Typically 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong background in Client Accounting Services (CAS), outsourced accounting, or a controller/finance manager role.
Deep, hands-on expertise in the cloud accounting ecosystem.
You must be a power-user of QuickBooks Online and have experience managing stacks with tools like Bill.com, Ramp, and Gusto.
A \"systems-thinker\" mindset.
You have a demonstrable passion for process improvement, automation, and finding better, more efficient ways to work.
A natural ability to act as an advisor, building trust and communicating complex financial concepts in a simple, human-centric way.
Nice to Haves:
Experience serving clients in our key niches (wineries, tech, real estate).
Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365.
A passion for mentoring and training junior staff as the practice grows.
A Clear Path to Leadership:

Location & Rhythm:
Santa Rosa, CA. This role is primarily onsite to foster deep collaboration with our tax teams and partners, with limited hybrid flexibility.
Benefits:
