The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Development reports directly to the Vice President of Advancement and the President of the UNH Foundation (VP). This position leads and manages a talented and dedicated team of front‑line fundraisers representing the primary colleges and programs of the University and athletics. The AVP oversees major giving, leadership giving, annual giving, planned giving and foundation relations teams and works closely with the VP and the development leadership team to create performance metrics, align department activities with University priorities, and implement data‑driven strategies that enable the team to hit annual and campaign long‑range fundraising goals.
The AVP exemplifies the highest standards of professional conduct and industry best practices, motivates and inspires staff to exceed goals, provides expertise in resource allocation and talent management, and demonstrates superior time‑management and communication skills. The AVP is a key ambassador for the University’s mission, vision and values and is actively engaged in the broader community.
Duties/Responsibilities
20% - Development Leadership, Strategy and Operations
Set clear guidelines and expectations around performance and conduct and ensure adoption by all team members. Adjust processes and policies as needed to ensure success.
Establish an appropriate meeting cadence and structure and other communication mechanisms that ensure team members at all levels are aligned and clear on goals and expectations, are engaged in the work, and have the resources and information needed to maximize their outcomes as efficiently and focused as possible.
Oversee recruiting, hiring, training, evaluation, and professional development efforts, in partnership with development leadership and HR partners, to maintain a full and strong staff and foster a collaborative, accountable, innovative, prideful and performance‑driven culture.
Drive the process for annual and campaign goal setting and partner with all team members to set challenging yet attainable fundraising and performance metrics for the overall department, applicable units, functional teams and individuals. Monitor, track and report on progress and projections throughout goal period, adjusting tactics as needed to stay on target.
Ensure the development team effectively collaborates and engages regularly with campus administrators, Deans, unit leadership and key faculty/staff to identify funding priorities that translate to compelling opportunities, leverage them in fundraising activities as able and educate and advise them on fundraising strategies as needed.
Manage all development budgets in partnership with development leadership and ensure alignment with Advancement goals/expectations and evolving University‑wide directives.
Manage relationships and contracts with key vendors and consultants to ensure development is provided the most cost‑effective and productive solutions that aid in its success.
Provide leadership to the UNH Foundation Board, in partnership with the VP for Advancement, specifically around assisting the Committee on Directors in recruiting new board members, and provide updates to/suggested topics for the Budget and Finance committee to deliberate on.
20% - Advancement Leadership and Collaboration
Collaborate effectively with Advancement Leadership Team colleagues to ensure an aligned, collaborative focus on shared goals that creates a healthy and balanced work environment, ultimately leading to overall success and achievement of the division’s priorities.
Partner closely with the AVP of Advancement Operations around development’s utilization of the critical services this team provides to support development work. This includes collaborating with the prospect research and management team to continuously identify and incorporate new high‑level prospects into the donor base, ensure that prospective and current donors effectively flow through the moves management process, maintain and enhance portfolios for all frontline fundraisers using industry best practices, and utilize their expertise in providing strategic research and pipeline analysis. Also includes working the other teams to ensure adherence to gift agreement and compliance policies and procedures, and collaborating around stewardship strategies, reporting, and gift and data management practices.
Partner with the Alumni Relations team to ensure alignment with campaign strategies and goals, and that those goals are reflected in the communications and programming around alumni events/reunions and other engagement opportunities.
Partner with the Senior Integrated Marketing Director for Advancement to set priorities and direct marketing resources utilized to support development work.
Partner with Advancement Information Technology colleagues to continuously improve and promote the systems, technologies and business intelligence needed to support development work and evaluate usage of these resources, adjusting as needed.
Provide insight and guidance as requested by the VP for Advancement and UNH Alumni magazine editor as it pertains to highlighting the impact of philanthropy in the magazine.
Serve as a key leader in campaign planning and execution and drive the determination of goals and strategies and own outcomes.
25% - Major Giving Program Management and Strategy
Provide leadership, mentoring and coaching to the Managing Directors for Development, and set the strategic direction for the entire major giving team, ensuring annual and campaign/long‑range fundraising goals are met. Create an environment of success that encourages significant growth in philanthropic engagement and achievement.
Engage the VP for Advancement in developing strategies that most effectively leverage campus leaders in cultivating, soliciting and ultimately closing increased philanthropic investments for the University. Include UNH Foundation Board, and unit‑level board members as appropriate.
Responsible for ensuring gift officers construct compelling gift proposals that meet the long‑term needs of University and match donor interests and are professional, timely, and compliant.
20% - Annual and Leadership Giving Program Management and Strategies
Provide leadership, mentoring and coaching to the leaders of the annual and leadership giving teams to create and set the strategic direction for these programs that utilizes best practices and available data analysis to achieve annual metric goals and pave a path for long‑term growth.
Implement a highly effective and data‑driven annual giving program with an optimal mix of strategies and tactics that focus on increasing critically important current‑use resources for the University, while stabilizing the donor base to support a healthy pipeline for leadership and major giving. This entails both a strong direct marketing program that maximizes return on investment and frontline fundraising activity by gift officers that aims to motivate more annual donors to increase their philanthropic commitments. All of which will require engaging campus partners, external volunteers and utilizing available technology to achieve results.

Create training and mentoring opportunities for all gift officers to increase bequests (the mainstay of the program), gifts of real estate, gifts in kind and other complex gift vehicles that meet the long‑term goals of the University, while supporting the specific goals and financial constraints of the donor. Ensure the team maintains an excellent working knowledge of gift planning, tax law, and charitable giving trends that the rest of the team stays current and updated on. And ensure the team appropriately balances their own frontline portfolio work and closing of estate gifts with consolatory work with other gift officers working on planned gifts, with clearly defined roles and processes.

With the VP, support them in setting the University‑wide strategic direction for foundation relations, that is aligned with and reflective of, the vision and goals of the Provost and Senior Vice Provost for Research. Ensure they set a cadence for regular meetings with key stakeholders, primarily the Provost and SVP for Research, but also Deans and other faculty that are engaged in this work and effectively leverage them to maximize foundation support for the University.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in business, public relations, or related field preferred with 15‑20 years of proven fundraising success in major, principal and/or deferred gift fundraising, or Bachelor’s degree and 12‑15 years of experience in major, principal and/or deferred gift fundraising
Demonstrated ability to measure fundraising effectiveness required.
Previous college/university or academic medical fund‑raising experience required.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
10 years of supervisory experience
Experience in all areas of fund raising, including major gifts, annual fund, gift planning, and corporate/foundation support; proven success in closing principal and leadership‑level gifts
Experience managing and achieving results in a metrics‑driven organization
Ability to develop and grow talent and skills in team members
Ability to travel nationally as needed
Commitment to creating a healthy, productive, collaborative team environment
Proven success in making sound, timely decisions with limited and/or ambiguous information
A desire to be part of a supportive, balanced culture that operates as a hybrid work environment.
