Director of Technical Services
Overview
The Director of Technical Services is responsible for leading all technical service operations related to the design, maintenance, repair, testing, and lifecycle management of power and distribution transformers. This leadership role ensures that service standards, customer expectations, and regulatory requirements are met while driving innovation, quality, and operation efficiency. The position is onsite and requires proximity to one of our three primary facilities located in Temple, TX; Solomon, KS; or Sharon, PA. Business travel is expected to range between 25% and 50%.
Responsibilities
Mentor, review and approve the designs, calculations and reports prepared by other technical staff through our peer review process.
Support field service teams by providing technical knowledge of electrical equipment.
Identify relevant industry and safety standards applicable to products and systems.
Create procedural standards, operation instructions, and manuals.
Develop multiple concepts to solve customer issues and concerns.
Aggregate and prioritize analysis support and knowledge for the development of product line features and design improvements.
Provide information for technical publications.
Collaborate with production and product support to resolve quality and/or functional issues.
Lead concept design reviews or other team meetings.
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
Lead a team to perform detailed root‑cause analysis inspections of electrical equipment and provide conclusions and recommendations.
Develop and implement technical services strategies for transformer operations (installation, commissioning, maintenance, repair, refurbishment).
Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) on transformer design, diagnostics, failure analysis, and field service practices.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical, Electrical, Engineering Technology or a General Engineering Degree.
10 years of engineering or related experience.
Strong safety orientation and thorough understanding of risk between people and machinery.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills.
Strong written communication, including routine reports and business correspondence.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Knowledge of transformer design for distribution and power transformers, including electrical design, manufacturing, and quality testing.
Power transformer design experience up to 350 KV BIL, including continuous disk and helical circular core and coil construction.
Distribution transformer design experience up to 200 KV BIL, including aluminum/copper wire and foil designs for rectangular core and coil construction.
Knowledge of electrical testing of distribution and power transformers, including dissolved gas analysis and acceptance testing.
Ability to evaluate specifications for distribution and power transformers.
Knowledge of industry OEM manufacturing standards, core types, and coil construction.
Working knowledge of distribution pad‑mount transformer components, fusing coordination, construction, clearances, and enclosure construction.
Working knowledge of power transformer construction, core types, and coil construction.
Working knowledge of transformer phasing, paralleling, impedance matching, banking, connections, and vectors.
Working knowledge of transformer design and applications for renewables and industrial applications requiring K‑ratings, electrostatic shielding, rectifier, inverter, furnace, and large motor inrush.
Working knowledge of transformer fluids including natural esters, silicone, and mineral oil, and understanding of thermal calculations, cooling requirements, and cooling fan, pump, and chiller rating.
Specialty transformer design knowledge, including series/parallel, 3 and 4 windings, grounding transformers, and neutral ground resistors.
Working knowledge of transformer fluid processing, drying, filtering, hot oil filling, vacuum processing, and oil processing equipment operation.
Working knowledge and operation of transformer test equipment, including turn ratio, winding resistance, insulation resistance, power factor, loss testing, and dielectric stress testing.
Ability to troubleshoot transformer issues related to connections, installation, application, and failure modes.
Knowledge of single‑phase distribution transformer connections, three‑phase banking, impedance requirements, and troubleshooting connection issues.
Basic computer and software skills, including Microsoft Office and MRP.
Availability for job‑site travel (variable, but less than 20% on average) for testing and validation of equipment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
