Job Summary
Under the direction of the Dean or designee, the Learning Skills Specialist will counsel students in areas such as learning and study strategies, time management, and test-taking skills, both in the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum, and prepare students for national licensing examinations (COMLEX-USA series and USMLE Step exams). The Specialist will effectively advise students on developing the academic skills necessary for success in medical school, incorporate stress management, mindfulness, concentration, and well-being strategies into academic counseling sessions, and support faculty by providing insight into learning theory to enable higher-quality instruction and assessment.
Responsibilities
Counsel students in learning and study strategies, time management, and test-taking skills across the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum.
Prepare students for national licensing examinations (COMLEX-USA and USMLE Step exams) and develop strategies for succeeding in the medical school curriculum.
Incorporate stress management, mindfulness, concentration, and well-being strategies into academic counseling sessions.
Collaborate with the WesternU COMP & COMP-Northwest Offices of Academic Affairs (OAA) and Student Affairs (OSA), and the WesternU Learning Enhancement & Academic Development (LEAD) office.
Provide insight into learning theory to support faculty in developing higher-quality instruction and assessment.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
Knowledge of adult learning theory, evidence-based health and well-being models, and adult learning theory.
Experience providing academic support services to students in an academic setting.
Familiarity with organizing and electronically managing large amounts of data.
Demonstrated effectiveness working with diverse student cohorts.
Familiarity with the basics of a health profession curriculum and content delivery in a fast-paced learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree in education or a related field.
Certification from the National Academic Advising Association or National College Learning Center Association.
A demonstrated passion for higher education and a willingness to learn.
Pay Minimum: $74,000 Annually Maximum: $74,000 Annually
