PREP Research Associate This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program, which enables NIST research staff to collaborate with academic institutions on mutually interested projects. Employees in this role perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Research Title Powder Diffraction SRM Development
The Work Will Entail Work with NIST staff on the Diffraction Metrology and Standards Program to develop world‑leading instrumentation for X‑ray diffraction and produce a suite of Standard Reference Materials for end users to calibrate their equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance, operation, and upgrades of NIST XRD equipment
Assistance with measurements and analysis related to certification of SRMs
Qualifications Ph.D. in Physics or a similar field
Expertise with LabView and Python
Strong track record of building and troubleshooting custom lab equipment
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Specialized experience with X‑ray sources, optics, and detectors a plus (but not required)
