Job Title: Animal Care Lab Technician

Job Description

The lab technician will perform a variety of specialized services for animals and animal colonies. This role includes observing and evaluating animals for signs of illness and stress, administering specialized drug treatments, and maintaining accurate records. The position also involves providing husbandry services, maintaining and decontaminating animal facilities, and serving as a resource for animal handling and care.

Responsibilities

Observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness, stress, and deviations in their condition.

Perform animal care with veterinary oversight, including specialized drug administration, sample collection, and pre- and post-procedural care.

Maintain records of treatments according to institutional, local, and federal regulatory standards.

Provide husbandry and specialized services for animals in animal colonies.

Maintain, sanitize, and decontaminate animal rooms and facilities within low to moderate hazardous areas, such as BL2.

Serve as a source of information to investigators and support staff on animal handling, restraint, pre- and post-procedural care, or sanitation services.

Train and instruct staff on sanitation, animal handling, restraint, and care techniques.

Perform periodic decontamination, maintenance, and rotation of equipment in facility washing centers.

Operate animal care processing equipment, diagnose mechanical, technical, and process problems.

Maintain inventory of supplies.

Drive vehicles to pick up and deliver animals and materials to assignment locations, applying proper animal handling and care protocols.

Perform additional related tasks as necessary.

Essential Skills

Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures.

Ability to recognize signs of well-being, illness, and abnormalities in animals.

Ability to understand and use short notes, basic written instructions, and forms, as well as complex and detailed protocols.

General knowledge of computer use and ability to monitor email.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Four years of work experience with two years in a related job family, and a high school education, or two years of related work experience and an Associate's Degree.

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science is preferred.

Ability to lift 50 pounds and good manual dexterity.

Work Environment

The position requires weekend hours, but not evening hours. The work environment includes a 12-week training/probation period with management ensuring proper training and transparent progress documentation.

The work schedule during training is Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 3:00, shifting to Friday to Tuesday from either 7:00-3:00 or 8:00-4:00 after training, with a 10% shift differential for weekends.

Staff are required to work appointed holidays and recess days, receiving straight pay for the full day and floating holiday time for hours worked.

Attendance is crucial as the role is considered essential, requiring reporting during inclement weather and holidays.

Personal Protective Equipment includes gloves and gown, and staff must pay for parking.

This is a Permanent position based out of New Haven, CT.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $50000.00 - $60000.00/yr.
